Spicer 24 Lubrication

Hi all,

Those of you that are 4X4 owners, what have you used for lube in the Spicer 24 divorced transfer case? My old Ford literature only mentions 80W or 90W (depending on temp range) for the T98 four speed trans but nothing for my transfer case.
While doing a search, another post mentioned using 50W. I'm unsure what to use now in my restoration project.
Whatever the general rule of thumb is, can i use it in both the transfer case and the transmission?

Well, the 1960 Ford truck manual says on page 17-14, to use (MIL-L-2104A) - S.A.E. 50 for the 4-wheel drive transfer case. Not really sure what you are working on but that's what I have to offer.

You might want to consider a shop manual for your truck, it can save you a lot of time!

Thanks for the reply. I've got the full parts book set on CD and didn't find any lube recomendations there. I'll have to look up a shop manual per your recomendation.
I'm just restoring a 1960 292/4-speed/4X4.

Thanks again,

Nick

I run 80-90 in mine but I don't run it year round. Its only on the road spring, summer and fall. In the winter when that may be a tad to stiff lube its not being driven.

Thanks Buzz44,

That's what I ended up pouring into both the trans and transfer case last night in the absence of finding straight 90 weight.
This truck too will be only used when the temps are above 40F. My floats are set way to high on the Holley 600 so it didn't get started for the first time last night. Truck project to continue after Harley's 110th wraps up...
