Modification Questions
Hello Everybody,
I purchased my 6.0 X about 2 weeks ago and after muchreading and some suggestions I have an idea of what I want to do when I startsome minor modifications.
I am planning to install a complete EGR delete kit but myconcern is the oil cooler. Right now myoil temps are 10-15 degrees higher than my coolant and I understand that oncethe delete is completed the temp spread isn’t that important. With reading some of the horror stories some peoplehave experienced with having to replace the cooler a few months after theycomplete the EGR delete I am strongly considering performing these two “fixes”at the same time, since I will have 95% of the items off already.
However, I would also be interested in hearing who hasinstalled an external oil cooler with a filter reposition. I can see how installing the oil cooler infront of the AC condenser would allow for better cooling since the cooler willno longer be located inside the hot motor. My questions are, for those who might have completed this modification, did you remove the internal oil cooler or leave it there? What type of filter relocation kit did youuse and how big is your external oil cooler?
My planned modifications are:
EGR Delete
Sinister Coolant Filter
External Transmission Cooler
4” Turbo back exhaust
I am not planning to make a super hot rod racer or somethingthat will press you back in your seat when you hit the go fast pedal; I justwant something we can use for family vacations and to pull a 30ft camper fromtime to time. Towing in Texas duringthe summer is extremely hard on vehicles and equipment, which is why I want toinstall the remote coolers and eliminate the known weaknesses of the 6.0.
Thank you,
Jeff

Being the temp spread is creeping up, doing the the oil cooler and the EGR delete at the same time is a great idea, recommended in fact.
The external oil coolers seem to work well for some of the owners who have them. The factory set-up is quite capable however as long as the cooling system is in good shape preventing the oil cooler clogging.
Your mod list looks fine. Trans cooling isn't normally an issue. I suppose if you intend on doing a lot of heavy pulling in the mountains extra capacity may come in handy but again, the factory system works well and adding a trans cooler isn't a common mod.

Your temp spread is indicating the oil cooler is plugging. Especially if those are the temps at a steady 65 mph.
Since all the parts have to be removed to do an EGR delete it makes good sense to go ahead and replace the oil cooler while you're at it. Better now with everything apart than in 6 months (or whatever) and the temps start climbing to 20, then 25 and so on.

I was reading more about remote coolers and filters earlier today and there is a DIY mod from hubler13f that looks fantastic. However, he hasn't signed on in over 6 months so getting the information might be a little difficult. For those who are interested it can be found under the 6.0 forum, I am pretty sure most people have looked at it once or twice. It was posted over 2 years ago, I am interested in how it is running today.
I will have to do some reading on the proper flush procedures, I would like to do it correctly the first time so I am not doing it all over again a few months down the road. I just changed the oil to Rotella T6 and put in a Motorcraft filter. How difficult is it to remove the block drains? Speaking of drain plug, who was the brilliant engineer who designed the oil pan with the drain on the bottom? Shouldn't it be installed on the side or back so it won't be knocked off if you hit a rock or log. I guess that will be something else I will do if I ever have to remove the oil pan.
Thanks,
Jeff
