HELP! Truck dies or "hiccups"

I have an 02 7.3 Superduty. It has a little over 250,000 miles and has ran perfectly. The last few months I will be driving through town and as I'm slowing to a stop the entire truck will completely die and shut off. No dash lights show up for a cause or anything. I'll put in it park and it will start right up and be fine. Then its started to "hiccup" for lack of a better description. Sometimes I'll be accelerating sometimes just driving. It is starting to happen a little more frequently and it is really starting to scare me as I have to drive over an hour to work and don't want to be stranded. If anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong I would appreciate it. Like I said, only 250,000 miles. I know it does need an oil change and an air filter. Thank you so much - Stacey.

You need to get hold of a good scanner like AE to pull the codes and do some analysis. Where do you live? There may be a forum member that can offer you help.

I just dealt with this same issue. Because my truck is new to me and I didn't know it's history or have access to a scanner, I replaced some suspect parts. Turns out it was the IPR valve sticking. Mine eventually got to the point that it refused to start after stalling.

Sounds like you've got a bad CPS Stacey. Stop by the Ford dealer and get one, or if the recall was never done, have them replace it. If you have to buy one, it should be less than $30.

Instructions to change it are here. Welcome to guzzle's CPS R&R Web Page<

It COULD be something else, but I agree with Chris. Your symptoms are a classic CPS problem.

Mine has the hiccup to, but does not seem as bad as yours. It will seem to shut off or something when driving and no throttle response for about 2 seconds then comes back on while rolling and drives just fine. Happens about once a week, but as much as I drive and the mileage I put on it, its actually not to often. Been thinking about getting a CPS to see if it changes, but as I said its rare so even if it does fix, I wont notice most likely.

I had the same symptoms, hiccup then stop, would start again. Read the codes with an old Superchips tuner/reader plugged into the OBD port. It showed a P0344 which is a CPS issue.

I changed out the CPS to a grey BW one. Problem solved - so far.

After watching a CPS change vid & a sepentine belt removal vid on U-tube it took me 12 minutes to change over the CPS sensor, the sensor itself was $25.

Keep an eye on the new BW CPS. If I use the BW in my truck the windshield wipers will make the truck die if you are idoling and hickup if you are driving down the road. Some other people have this issue, some don't. You may not have the issue, just keep an eye out. Otherwise it actually makes my truck idol smoother than my IH CPS.

Thanks for that. No issues with using the wipers, I happened to clean off the dust laying on the windshield with the washers & wipers.

I did get a 'hic' at full boost WOT uphill a couple of times in a hilly 240 mile drive, pulled a few soft codes (usual code for AIH & EBPV deletes), no CPS code though.

The idle does seem smoother with the new CPS!

For the original poster...you do not need to remove the serpentine belt to do this. Just a 10mm socket wrench with short extension, and maybe a screwdriver for light prying. Do it from under the truck. Takes less than 10 minutes start to finish. ***You may need a flashlight to help locate the CPS if you're not familiar with it's location...but it's easy to find***
