Yeah that's how I feel, some changes we make to our trucks are for safety and some are for convenience. Generators can be hard to get. I keep a spare 12v even though I run alt. I should get a reg and the wiring.......or get rid of extra gen. With what Alt cost today it's cost efficient compared to gen. They even have 6v Alt if you want to keep it that way.

POLARIZING A 2 BRUSH FORD GENERATOR:
Disconnect the FIELD terminal wire at the regulator and momentarily touch this wire to the BAT terminal of the regulator. NEVER use a jumper wire to keep from disconnecting the fieldwire at the regulator it’ll ruin the regulator in a hurry.
The field wire MUST be disconnected from the regulator. MoPar and GM generators are not polarized in this manner due to their different design.
6 Volt Electrical
I don't know if it will help, here is the hole page and yes some guy had charge problems.
Do this than try to motor the Genny again. But it's a simple thing to clean the commutator segments and the mica between them and replace the brushes. Of course the field coils must be good. But unless there has been a short that smoked the Genny it's pretty hard to toast the field coils.

I'd be checking voltage drop along the battery leads, as others have already ststed, just because they are original doesn't mean they're good. For the price I'd swap the coil and condenser as well.

I'm with Ross. Put an alternator in it.

Or if you're worried about looks go for a Dynogen, an elternator that looks like a generator, that's what I did.

Thanks for the suggestion - I did pull the end plate off the generator and cleaned and refreshed the faces of the brushes I replaced over the winter. Didn't reflash yet - will get back to it.
