adding oil to the A/C compressor
I'm replacing the seal in the A/C compressor of my '95 powerstroke. It has had a leak for quite a few years and I finally found the leak on the shaftseal. I know I have been losing tiny amounts of refrigerant oil all these years but am not sure just how much oil it takes or how I would know at what level it is operating. I have access to recovery machines and all the good stuff to do the recovery and recharge. Any help would be appreciated.

If you think you have lost the oil that means the refrigerant is also gone. There is no separate reservoir for the oil like A/C compressors used to have. With that said that means the inside of the system has been exposed to moisture.
Best suggestion is to replace the compressor and receiver/drier (accumulator). That way you can start with a fresh charge of oil. A new compressor is usually pre-charged with 7 oz. of oil. When replacing the accumulator it is suggested to add another 2-3 oz.
Whenever you open an A/C system is is highly recommended to pull out the orifice tube to inspect it for signs of debris. If there is a lot of black build up on it then you know the hoses, condenser and evaporator need to be flushed.
Regardless of the condition of the orifice tube, I suggest to replace it too.
