UVCH pig tail wires splice together?

I just bought this truck its a 96 f350 dually, I am new to the diesel. The truck was running fine went to a friends house and then when the truck started it was running really bad. I got the truck home and started reading the forum after a bit of research it looks to be the passenger uvch. The front pass side pigtail is burnt and the two outside wires are spliced together. Kinda wondering if there might have been a problem prior and someone tried to put a band-aid on it. Any thoughts?

Thanks james

This is a common problem with these trucks. You can splice them together and solder but is probably best to replace them. I used the single SD UVCH on mine and splice and solder the pigtails on. They are stronger bigger wires. Welcome to FTE!

If you plan on replacing everything, you will also save about $100 by swiching to SD parts, and you won't have anymore trouble like this (just be sure to also do the $0.50 mod). You can get all the parts (OBS or SD) from riffraffdiesel.com. Clay is a good guy there.

need to explain the passenger side front plug that is burnt, has the two black outside wires of the plug spliced together on top of the plug. I was wondering why.

Shouldn't be that way. Those are the glow plug wires for those two cylinders. They were probably shorting into the next two pins in, which are the injectors. The center pin is common.

You can buy '99-'02 7.3 Super Duty UVCHs and pigtails. They only have one plug per side and are supposed to be heavier gauge wire I believe. They are cheaper than ours too. You take all the wires from the two pigtails, and wire them to the one SD pigtail. It's not hard to do if you know how to solder wires.

Make sure you do the 50 cent mod, just in case. Some never have problems with the connector, but some do. For 50 cents, its worth making sure it doesn't happen to you.

The only heavier wires are the glow plug wires, but that's the ones we want heavier anyway. I put them on the same time Glenn did. I liked the idea of heavier glow plug wires, plus being about 100 bucks cheaper for it all.
