4R100 In an obs

Hello guys, Has anyone ever put a 4R100 in an obs? I can get a Bts trans at a great price off a friend parting his truck. I'm just trying to figure of if it will work right. I did some searching but came up empty. Did find someone saying the 96 Pcm will for but the TC will lock up hard. If so can this be tuned out?

Thanks for any input.

It can't be tuned out. The problem is that the E4OD had an on/off solenoid. When the PCM commands the solenoid on the pressure to lock the clutch it is fed through a small orifice, I think it was about 0.030". The 4R100 has a PWM solenoid that is pulsed on and off very quickly to control the clutch on. The orifice was opened to what we called wide open, which is usually 0.250" or larger. The solenoid driver in the '96 is only able to be on or off, it can't pulse.

You could change the solenoid to an on/off and change the orifice back to 0.030", if that is the right number.

Or control the trans with a PCS controller. This is a bit of an expensive option, but the PCS controller is absolutely awesome when it comes to getting your shifts exactly where you want them.

How hard is it change and worth it? Are the 4R100 and E4OD the same case or close!

It 850.00. I'm not sure what a bts cost new but I thought it was just over 4k, or maybe 5? It will be more then I paid for the truck. I've got no clue on set up.

Very, very close. The mounting points and bellhousing (as long as both are diesel transmissions) are identical. It will bolt right in.

It's not hard if you know what you're doing. I don't know your level of competence on a trans, so I can't say if it would be easy or hard for you to do. A trans shop might be able to make the change for you very easily if you take it to them before installing the transmission.

Well mark, I don't totally understand trans but I'm a mechanic by trade. Can the parts be taken out of mine or ordered from ford? Guy down the street from me works on tranys all day so I can talk to him.

great buy! you can't pass that price up for a built 4r100!
just do as Mark says and take it to a trans shop.i had found someone locally who knows these trans inside and out like clockwork and then some to build mine.
i can't recall right off brother, but i think all you need is to do is bolt your E40D pump in place of that 4r100's and then swap solenoid packs with your old one as well.
(or get new/reman of each.E40D and year range specific of course.)
a competent shop will know what to do and get it done for ya anyway.there isn't a whole lot that needs to be changed (if there even is anything more im forgetting.)

The bts 4r100 is 5,500 new and I can get it about 2k less with 30,000 miles. I don't know anyone in my local area I'd trust working on it. Not sure how Brian would like someone else in this trany. I'm totally fine with swapping parts as long as it doesn't cause problems down the road.

I will have to pull out my atra manual but iirc, you need to remove the pump and change out the pwm valve for the e4od on/off valve and drill/replace a plug. Then you need to swap out the harness.

the atra supplement covers the differences and how to convert one to the other.
