Tranny help

I am in the process of obtaining my grandpa's 1988 f150 as a first vehicle. The problem is the transmission is rough and I need help identifying which automatic transmission it has so I can look into parts or a replacement one for it. It is a 5.0. Incase that helps.

Welcome to FTE.

'88 F150 302 auto is probably an AOD. Does the shift quadrant read like so:
P-R-N-OD-D-1?

If so, AOD.

The AOD is a 4 speed auto with a lockup torque converter. Early models were trouble, '88 and later are a lot better. DO NOT replace this with an earlier model.

It could also be a C6. The C6 is a 3 speed, non-OD, non-lockup trans. Tough as nails, and quite a bit cheaper to fiddle with than the AOD.

Transmission people, shameless bastids that they are, have a "We OC for the OD" mentality. (OC = overcharge)

ID your trans for sure with:

Hi, thanks for the quick reply,

It is indeed the aod transmission, should I look into a good used transmission or should I look into a new one?

Look into having yours rebuilt. You know it's not a total loss or been it a wreck to tweek the case.

Find a shop that knows the AOD and has a good warranty policy. If a shop says they are all the same, move on. Ford made upgrades to these as the went along, and '88 is the year they solved the rear lube issue, and better boxes followed. (see the links)

If you do swap for a reman, insist it be '88-'93. Not sure how to know the exact year of the trans--can't find anything that says how to determine it easily either.
