How long did you wait before towing?

Just curious how long before you guys started towing with your trucks? My truck has 300 miles on it and I had to do a short 10 mile tow with it over the weekend. It was only 4k lbs.

Ok, I'm lying. I really wanted to see what the EcoBoost can do..

How long before I can take her out for a tow on the highway..?

You're not going to hurt it. The manual says 1,000 miles, and I was able to wait about 900 of them before hooking up to my big trailer. Lots of people hook up to heavy things once they get it home and never have any issues. I've never heard of anyone with any issues from it.

So what did you think of your first tow?

There's nothing not to love about this truck so far, but I just didn't have time to go very far. Coming from thousands of miles of towing with a PSD, I really want to get this thing on the highway @ 70mph to give you my honest opinion. What are the mpg's you're getting towing with yours?

I waited until just over 1,000 miles, but I doubt it will really make a difference to do it sooner. The Ecoboost tows really good. I'm getting 8.5-9.5 mpg towing somewhere in the 8k range (never had it weighed). That is up from 7-8 mpg with the 2010 5.4 I had before that did the job, but had to work it much harder. The Eco never seems to be working hard and doesn't need to be wound up high to move.

I've never really understood the reason for needing to wait for the miles to accumulate before towing. I'm reasonably sure they don't wait till there's 1,000 miles on big trucks before connecting trailers to them.

I think the reason is the need to give the transmission some time before towing.

Edit:

Although there are lots of companies that do not have the luxury of waiting for 1000 miles for towing, and tow with them right off the bat.

I think it's to give the entire driveline time to seat, rear axle, transmission and engine.

I recall reading somewhere about waiting 500 miles to tow with the 6.7 Not sure if was any break in period with the EcoBoost.

The diesel supplement for the 6.7L includes the same 1,000 mile statement that every other Ford truck in recent memory. There are no engine-specific break-in instructions.

The biggest engine break in is to vary the engine speed to allow for parts to seat properly.

Our dealer told us there was no reason to wait. Just keep it under specs... Well, do that all the time, because they can tell if you are overweight towing and you can void the warranty.

How exactly can they do that?
