F350 Alternator

Guys,
My alternator is getting to the end of its life. Was looking at a Leese Neville 350AMP unit. Anyone know much about this alternators. Hoping the 350AMP won't cause any issues for the truck.

Watch at what rpm the alt. produces that amperage. you need that much juice? It also produces alot of heat and an alternator that size should have a relocated regulator, not only doesn't it fit in that housing the heat would kill it, most alt upgrades give you everything you need for the install just check first before spending that kinda cash

David,
Don't really need that much juice. Just going to do this repair one, so want to put the best product on. I seriously looked into the dual set up, but from the threads I have read, sounds like more trouble than its worth.

Maybe I should just look at a 250AMP unit then if the 350AMP is going to cause me grief hey.

Yea, I looked into the twin alts too, ya to much trouble, go with the 250, quick swap and plenty of juice to run lights or other accessories. I would rather have alittle more juice than not enough, make sure your batteries are in good shape as well.

Wallsy,
I've been considering one of these,

TAD-275 Amp Ford Powerstroke Diesel High Amp Alternator, Nations Auto Electric

still researching at the moment.

You also might want to consider rebuilding your existing alternator.

They often go bad because of a bad regulator or diode in the alternator itself. Both are a cheap and easy fix.

With low draw LED driving lights/bars now-a-days, there aren't that many things that you might want that would draw continuous high current that would justify a really high amp alternator.

Adrian,

Though it would be a good chance to up grade from the original alternator. Besides I don't trust anyone locally to get the job done correctly or even once for that matter.

David,

The only reason I really pulled back from giving the dual alternator a crack was that Ford US no longer sell the wiring loom that join the alternators together.

Brian,

I will have a look into that one mate.

My main concern is having the current to keep the two 100AH deep cycle batteries in the back charged as well as running all the extra lights, cameras, fridge etc.

Yeah, in some circumstances it does make sense. I have the factory HD alternator (200amp), but even with a camper on the back and powering it, its overkill.

yep. thats what Im running. Local here wanted to charge $450 to replace the 130amp. Got the HD (which I think they ran in the ambo's) from the States $ 250 delivered.
Not a straight swap tho. as you can see here
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-install.html
It runs the two up front. One in the bed and one in the camper when its in use.

There's all way the option of solar to run the third battery

I have the three batteries in the truck that run off the stock alternator, and when not running the truck (parked up for a few days) I'm plugged into the solar on the van, now the van has a 400a/h lithium battery so this does charge up quickly and keep the fridge in the truck cool.

Blue7.3, I'd be interested to see how you wired that up! (perhaps you can elaborate in another thread?) I have a slide on camper that I have a panel on, and it keeps the camper battery charged, but I have a 35l fridge in the truck itself, and want to run it off the camper for when I'm parked.

Okay Adrian, I'll start a new thread on charging for Lithium batteries.
