That type of cable is very hard to cut. You need more than the local
HomeDepot bolt/cable cutters. And if you have the tire stuffed under
your truck then you can arrange the cable to that there is not any room
to easily get at it.
Where locking lug nuts only need a socket and hammer to remove them.

When I had my stock spare I used a cable that was 1/2" thick and what happened is that the lock became so corroded with salt the key would not fit anymore. So what I did was use a cordless angle grinder and it took about 5 seconds to cut threw that cable....That was the last $70 cable that I bought.
I have seen on video that people use cordless reciprocating saws to cut off the catalytic converters, it happened a few times at the parking lot at my old job.

As for the socket with a hammer ya that works sometimes.
I do know that nothing is theft proof, if they want it bad enough they will find a way to take it.

Nice work. I had a blowout at 2 am in the middle of nowhere and had to use a pair of 8" cutting pliers to cut mine down from the stock location. Now I just throw it in the bed if I am making a long trip.
