90 bronco transmission question
Hey guys
Have a question this is going to be my first bronco I have had lots of ford trucks and a couple expeditions. I'm looking at a 90 bronco Eddie Bauer. 302 automatic. The question I have is the engine and Trans and transfer case is out of a 91 f150 it has the AOD Trans the guy says the kick down cable isn't hooked up. It goes down the road ok but I notice it revs higher than normal when shifting not slipping just have to get more speed and rpm to do the shift and the shift is a nice solid shift no slipping. Motor and Trans both have 80k miles and I seen the paperwork to prove it. Its a real nice rig and I'm getting it real cheap (trading a quad) what should I think of this Trans is there a adjustment or what? I didn't think the 91 AOD had a lockdown cable thought it was electronic. Help before I make a bad decision and wind up with a POS

I have a 90 Bronco. It has the AOD trans. The kickdown cable shifts the trans down a gear when pulling. I don't use the Overdrive lever position until I'm at cruising speed and never when running up a hill.
I'm not sure about the 91 but it might have been a electronic trans E40D I think they call it or maybe it's E04D.
Anyway, the AOD has a pan with a distinctive pocket in it. It's not a flat bottom, it has about a 2 inch rise.
Sounds like the trans is working ok, but the best thing to do is to have a mechanic check it all out.

The AOD TV cable is critical to correct transmission operation as it controls line pressure in parallel with throttle position and it must be connected and set to a certain preload or the transmission won't work at all.. unless its been modified with a special valve body to apply full line pressure at all times.. which would make it really harsh to drive on the street as it would want to hold on to the gears too long on both upshifts and downshifts. With an unodified AOD if the TV cable is simply disconnected it would slip excessively and all the clutches and bands would get burnt up real quickly if it was driven.

Now on to the rear gate! Help
Thanks for the kickdown info guys. I did the trade and now a owner of a great EB bronco. Have anothe problem the rear gate won't open. Put the key in and it won't turn? What can I do to get this thing open without destroying the gate. The gate is perfect no rust or dents so I don't want to take a hammer and screwdriver to it yet. Help!

did you ever figure out what tranny you have in there also? get your self a haynes or chiltons manual, excellent lite reading material.
you should also have a switch on the dash to control the window. make sure its all the way down before attempting to open otherwise you can bend the hardware inside the tailgate

Its possible the key is not really for that cylinder. If it wont turn, get some spray silicone and soak the inside where the key goes into the cylinder. Let it sit for a little while then try key. You should also try the switch on the dash to lower window. If that doesnt work you can take the access panel off the inside of tailgate and look inside where the key cylinder is with a light. You will see a "cam" on the end of the cylinder that makes contact with a microswitch mounted beside it to raise and lower glass. Try pushing the little buttons the cam contacts to see if the motor/regulator works, just dont pinch the dookie out of yourself with any moving parts. That'll hurt like a sumbitch.

I did indeed get the paperwork for the bronco. The original motor broke a ring and according to the receipts the motor Trans and transfer was replaced in feb 2013 with a 1990 f150 motor AOD Trans and transfer case with 67k on it At the same time both driveshafts all tie rods drag link and ball joints also changed. Also the auto hubs were swaped out with new warn manual hubs and new dual exhaust. And also all sensors were replaced with new ones. And there has only been 500 miles put on everything since it was done. I think it was a pretty good deal providing I traded a quad for this thing
