Oil Change

I had a chance to crawl under the truck today while installing the transfer case skid plate and have a look around. When you guys change engine oil, does the oil coming out hit the track bar? The dealer will be doing the first change, freebe, but I will be doing the rest,
Thanks....

Only the last bits of oil drizzle on the swaybar, not the full stream. The oil filter dumps on it though!

Get a Fumoto valve for your drain plug. Very neat.

DJR probably meant: http://www.fumotovalve.com
Get the one with a nipple so you can attach a hose to run to your collection device.

I'm looking for a hollow (like a big IV needle), sharp device to puncture the filter for draining it before unscrewing. Been using an awl, awlfully messy though.

Ideas?

Try using a meat injector like they use for turkey basting/frying. I have one for injecting spices/seasoning when I fry turkeys and that should work fine. A couple of bucks at Wal-Mart and your clean when changing the oil. Great idea about puncturing and siphoning out the filter oil.

I do this too. Any luck getting the oil to completely drain? I've poked that filter from every angle and place possible. Still, after it looks like the oil has drained out, when I spin it off oil still runs out of it and down my arm.

I've used a tip I picked up here on the forum about a year ago. Cut the bottom out of a 2 liter bottle...loosen the filter...then slip the bottle over the filter for the actual removal. All of the oil runs into the bottle. If the filter drops down in also, it's not that big of a deal - just a little messy for disposal.

Great tip, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Oil Change

I just did my initial 5000 mile oil change. I bought Motorcraft 5w20 oil and Motorcraft filter from Wal Mart. Oil was $1.80 per quart and the filter was less than $3.00. The oil says it is semi senthetic so I thought $1.80 was reasonable. Also, it looks like the filter has a anti-drainback valve in it. I filled the new filter with oil before I installed it.
