Just a warning, diesels are expensive to maintain right. Parts aren't cheap and if you can't work on them yourself, you will pay a high price for a shop to do it. But stick around here and we can point you in the right direction for parts and teach you how to work on it when it goes down. And another vote for obs. Try to find an f350 once it already has the solid axle.

I think if you are patient you can find a good one for around 8k. Might have a few more miles on it, but still sound. The trick is patience. When I started looking for mine I was watching all the 12-15k ones and probably would have paid it if I had found the right one close enough. In the end, after about 3 months of seriously watching craigslist, autotrader and ebay, I found mine for $8200 and while it isn't perfect, it is pretty clean and runs great. I figure I'll put around 5k in it over the next 2 years to get it just like I want it and then it is just maintenance. BUT... be careful, cause the guys on here will always try to convince you that you need more upgrades and power!!!!! lol

Also, be sure to check your fuel pressure with a tire gauge.

Agreed, in the northwest you'll pay a small fortune for a clean obs. I paid 15k for mine two years ago with 104k miles and I'm not kidding when I say there was another guy waiting at the dealer to buy it if I didn't seal the deal. They're well known for being super reliable workhorses and a cc 4x4 with a 100k or less will fetch 15k-20k around here. Kinda nuts but it's a lot of truck for the money. $60k for a new one that has twice the maintenance cost and will most likely give you many more issues.. Clear picture

i see the attraction to 4x4 but if your gonna be a pavement princess like me, it's unnecessary. that will open you up to a lot more trucks for much less money. being in wisconsin, i'm assuming they are all rusted and rotted out like the trucks around chicago. mine came from texas, 245xx miles, 2x4 cclb 350. i had to do glow plugs within a month. try looking in MO or southern il. or farther south. it'll be worth the drive to get a nicer truck. and these guys are great. this is my first diesel. i believe they have saved me $1000 in labor costs for the repairs i've made. Get the obs unless you really want the newer lariat.

Um, I think you are missing the point. Which one lasts longer? That is a loaded question depending on who owns what truck and mostly based on opinion. A few guys have said that the OBS is a "workhorse" and very dependable while also being less cost to maintain. That should answer your question? As far as tuning, I would think that should be your least concern being a noob to owning a diesel, but now I am starting to repeat myself.

I would decide on what costs you less up front and is easier for you to learn to maintain and work on, which would be an OBS in this case. maybe go over to the Super Duty forum and do some research over there and learn the differences.

Tuning should be the least of your worries. Right out of the gate the SD make some more power, but to make power, the same basic things are done in the end.
