E4OD Shudder
I have a 92 F-250 460 E4OD, 77000 miles.
Can anyone give me the symptoms of a torque converter shudder? I hear a metal type rattle, shudder and vibration when the drive line is under load (accelerating) and the transmission has shifted into 2nd or 3rd. If I let up on the gas the noise goes away. When I cruise at freeway speeds there is no noise unless I accelerate. I have had the drive shaft rebuilt and balanced and the rear end was inspected and no problems were found. Please help, the noise is getting worse. FYI there is NO sheet metal banging around under the truck...Thanks I'm frustrated

The torque converter shudder feels like driving on washboard road usually right after upshift to 3rd gear (direct) and again after upshift to 4th (od). If you touch the brake pedal to turn on the stop lights the shudder will immediately stop. At the mileage you list I would change the oil in the transmission and the torque converter. Probably about 14-15 qts if 2wd 16 qts if 4x4.

Will just changing the trans/converter fluid & filter take care or this "torque converter shutter"?? I feel the same thing (very mild) in my Explorer 4X4 (79000 miles) but have not serviced the transmission yet. It is a 2002 and manual says not to service until 150,000 miles?!? There is no dip-stick....

Changing the fluid sometimes does fix Torque shudder.
Besides, you would probably want to drop the pan to check the condition of the tranny anyway. What I wonder is how do you add fluid if there is no dipstick tube? How do you check for fluid condition and level?
Man I hate it when engineers simplify the wrong things.
Good Luck,

The way it was explained to me... FORD installed "sealed" transmissions on the 02 Explorer after filling them with para-synthethic ATF and "rugged" testing. The owners manual states that checking fluid level/condition must be done from under the vehicle through filler plug... They recommend first ATF/Filter change at 150,000 miles; but, like I said earlier, I now have signs of "Torque converter Shutter" at 79,000 miles!!!

I have a 97 F150 that got the same symptoms at about 50K. One tranny shop wanted a few thousand to fix it. The local garage changed the fluid and filter, and problem was solved. It started again at about 95K. Another fluid and filter...problem solved again. I haven't tried it yey, but I have seen shops offering tranny "flush and fill." It seems to me that it might be a good idea to try that for a hundred bucks or so before diving in too deep. Good Luck.
