S400 turbo identify?

I'm picking up a S400 turbo and a basic Irate mount kit I found a good deal on. HOWEVER, he doesn't know what the turbo is, only that its a S400 frame. And that it has some shaft play. Whats a rebuild kit cost for one of these turbos, where can I get one, and how can I tell what turbo is it? S467/468/480 etc. I assume there is lots of choices in this frame, just wondering what truck it should go on once I get out of the sandbox. I was planning on buying a S468FMW from Irate with the complete mount kit with intercooler piping, for $850 think this deal is in the money?

Measure the small and large diameters of the inducer wheel.
The exhaust housing size is just as critical, and hopefully the size is stamped on the housing.
Jake should be able to help give pointers on exactly what to look for and determine size based on the numbers you provide.

Yeah, pull the compressor cover, measure the inducer and exducer of the compressor wheel. Pull the turbine housing, do the same for the turbine wheel. Look on the turbine housing and see if the A/R measurement is casted into the housing. Preferably try to get the seller to measure for you with a micrometer before you buy so that you know what you're buying. Make sure the tag on the center section says S400 too.

On the compressor housing, if the outlet is v-band, it's a standard housing. If the outlet accepts a boot/clamp setup, it's probably a race cover.

There are tons of combinations that can be set up on this frame. You could have a 65mm, billet 66mm, 67.7mm FMW, 67.7mm cast, 71mm, 72mm FMW, 75mm, 76mm, 78mm, 80mm, and 82mm. And of course there are going to be aftermarket billet versions of most of those wheels. Some 7 blade, 11 blade, some with a different angle pitch on the fins than others, etc.

There will also be several turbine wheels and housings. Your looking at 83mm, 87mm, 92mm, and IIRC there's a 96mm turbine wheel. There are 4 different A/R ratios with the T4 flange that I'm aware of. 0.90 A/R, 1.0 A/R, 1.10 A/R, and 1.25 A/R. There are some T6 flange housings out there too. I haven't dealt with any yet, but IIRC there's a 1.32 A/R and a 1.51 A/R with a T6 flange. Not sure of any other T6 options.

So, in your opinion, what combo should I be hoping for? I have two 7.3 I can put it on, a work truck that will see daily towing, and one that I plan on building as you know. Is there any I should stay away from for either? I know a 82/92 would be too big for the work truck, but any pointers would be great. Thanks!

I'm not sure of the specs on your work truck, but an S465 or S468(67.7mm) is about as big as I would go for that one, but you'll need stage 2s at least for that.

On the truck your building, IIRC its going to be around 550-600hp. For that one I would stay around the S468 or S471 if you plan to drive it quite a bit on the street. If it will be mostly a play truck an S475 would be OK, but I would go to some 300/200s or 400/200s for that one and it'll probably be around 620-640hp or so.

The work truck will be getting the rosewood stages 2's out of my dually, and then using the stock sticks as cores or sending them in for rebuilds. So I guess I'll figure out what truck its going in after I pick it up. Well, my brother is picking it up, passed directions onto him so hopefully he can tell me.. And the work truck is BONE stock other then a 5 speed conversion and a 6" lift at the moment..
