5.4/4.6 oil consumption?
I have to agree with 03f150man, when I spoke of 'zero' consumption I was making a statement which was accurate but not precise. I'm certain that a couple of ounces of oil are lost due to vaporization and seepage, but not enough for me to take notice by a change in the oil level. Only when I pulled a trailer for 5500 miles, across two mountain ranges twice without changing oil did I notice a drop in the oil level. I lost 1/4 of the distance between add and full (about a cup?).

5.4/4.6 oil consumption?
OK stand corrected. I meant to say that by using 'zero' as an absolute - the statement would have to be considered false. But by saying 'zero' within the realm of reasonable precision given the accuracy of the dipstick and the operator - the statement was accurate.

5.4/4.6 oil consumption?
I have a 98 F150 w/ 85,000 miles on it. I live in the carribean so the temp here is usually never below 75. I change my oil every 9,000 miles because i use synthetic and the only problem i had was when i did not use a good oil filter. Fram, Progauge, leaked oil but the motorcraft, bosch and wix I have used them and their is never any greasy oil on it.

5.4/4.6 oil consumption?
I have an 03 with only 6000 miles on her so this isn't a long time example. I have never had to add any oil to the truck. I've changed the oil 3 times since I bought the truck so I might not be a good example. (500, 2500, 5000) I check it once every couple of days and it has never moved below the half way mark!
Hope this helps

5.4/4.6 oil consumption?
For "Black1", I just changed oil on my 03' f 150 4x4 Lariat @ 750 mi. I 've always used Fram oil filters w/ previous vehicles (Olds, Fords, Chevys) without any obvious problems. I used the new Fram type filter on current oil change and am concerned about your post regarding switching back to Motocraft. Would like to know what you have found w/ the Frams. Thanks...

burning oil
How many of you guys/gals are having this problem? Im just curious because Im considering a new f150 as my next truck, but I've read some people posting about this and even thinking its "ok" for a truck to consume oil between 3000 mile intervals.Im a Toyota driver that would love to go back to a American truck,so Im hoping this isn't typical of these engines.
P.S.I know Im not going to see many "Yee Haw my truck doesn't use any oil" post,so thats why Im trying to get real world feedback from satisfied customers.
Thanks
Randy

hi,
i have a 2002 expedition 5.4L. it has 117k miles on it, but it has consistently burned a quart every thousand miles for several years. i made a point of telling this to the service department where i get service and they acted like it was normal. i don't think it's normal at all to go through oil like that. i have not tried exclusively using motorcraft filters, but i may give it a try. i'm glad to read these posts. at least now i know i'm not crazy!

oil consumption
I have a '00 f-150 with the 4.6L. It now has 214k miles on it. I change the oil & filter religiously every 3000 miles. Originally it used no oil between changes but now its consumption is ~1/2 quart between changes.
After nearly a quarter of a million miles I don't consider that excessive.
It still runs great.
The Dodge I had before this (360 4bbl) used a quart every 700 miles, now THATS excessive!
