How hard to swap a 42 59AB for a 49 8BA
#2
I've done this swap into the earlier car, and remember needing to get either a '48-'52 pickup or '49-'50 Mercury bellhousing and related starter plate. If you use the Mercury bellhousing, it won't have enough clearance for an 11" Long clutch. The 10" B&B Mercury clutch will work, but you would have to use the Merc. flywheel. I used the flywheel from the ealier engine on mine, but had to use a spacer and do some grinding on the back of the block to get enough clearance. I used the late Mercury water pumps with the narrow belts, but I think you can use the early pumps, fan, generator, etc. Your radiator hoses won't fit the heads, but I think you can now buy thermostat housings with the larger outlets so you can find standard flex hoses that will fit.
