76 f150 360 to 400 swap Farm rat

76 f150 360 to 400 swap Farm rat
newb here, well to this site.

Heres a run down of what ive got going on, followed by what i already know, and last what am i missing and questions concering my swap. Also note that the 360 is still in the truck and runs have not torn it apart yet. This thread will also continue as a build up of this truck as basically a DD/dirtbike-quad hualer/rat truck.

first, 1976 f150. I got this in a trade for a junk car trailer that i had no need for. Its a 2wd, manual T18 4spd, FE 360runner with an over heating issuse. i dont think its worth the time or cash to rebuild a 360. I just so happen to have a 400 sitting around that came out of another project thats also getting an engine swap. so in goes the 400.

so heres what im already aware of. In order to bolt the 400 to the T18 i need a manual bellhousing for the 400 or the 429/460 BB bolt pattern which I have. I should be able to run the OEM flywheel and clutch from the 400 as i am only bolting up to a differnt trans(400 was bolted to a NP435). Im obviously going to have reroute exhuast as the 400 has headers and complete flomaster exhuast to go with it. There may be clearence issuse with the driver side header and steering gear box but i will address that if need be.

so my questions for the more knownledgeable/ experinced ford motor swap guys!

Are the motor mounts the same?
(from what i can see, yes. i may be wrong)

The 400 has a front sump oil pan, will I have to change it to rear sump to clearence the engine crossmember?

uuhhhhh.......... i guess i ran out of questions. well any info or thoughts would be help full. please correct me if im wrong on anything(anything reguard the truck ***** Im already aware of my horrible spelling and gramar) , thanks in advance.

Welcome, are you here in Oregon? I also have a 400 sitting in my shop and I thought the same thing about the engine mounts, that they look close to the FE mounts in my truck, but have not tried them. The guy I got the engine from had said it was in a 64 Galaxie, so they could be something made for that swap.

thanks, yes im in portland area.

even if they are not exact im sure i can fab something up thats simple and will work just fine. my other concern is the engine mount pedistals! Do they very in height and distance on the frame from one side to another as there is a difference in block demensions. I do notice a difference from the left to the right engine mount pedistal as there is a factory 1.25-.50" offset to the passenger side .
Are they different in the sense that these trucks came with a few different engine options so each engine has its paired engine pedistals w/ engine mounts? or are the engine pedistals all the same and the engine mounts only paired to the the specific engine.

you'd think that the pedistals should all be the same and will except any engine mount.

ive got an other 400 other than the one im already talking about swaping in, so ill pull the mounts off that and compair them to the FE360 mounts when i get that yanked.

I have read that the engine pedestals are different, but I installed a 429 block in my 76 F250 4x4 using the 360 pedestals and used the engine mounts for a 360, just had to modified them to fit on the engine. That truck is in Portland at this time.

so ive been tinkering on the truck disconnecting the wiring, pulled the radiator. im going to attempt to seperate the front clip as a whole assembly then remove the enigne.

any tips/tricks to lower the front suspension on this truck with out buying anything????? (twin I-beam with radius arm and coils) only thing i can think to do is move the coil bucket up some. im only looking to lower an inch or 2.

my plan for tomorrow after work is;

1) get the front clip off the truck

2) drian motor oil

3) put the truck up on jack stands

4) unbolt motor from trans leaving bell housing attached to motor.

if i actually get that far tomorrow night.

followed by pressure washing the frame ,front axel asembly, clean up and paint the front of the frame. im not really going for show quality but to just clean the truck up a bit.
