Third Brake Light?

Looking at options for Dad's truck and have a couple of questions. Have any of you seen or tried the third brake light/cargo light as shown at the bottom of this page from LMC? And, would you agree that in spite of the statement that "it requires no modifications" that it will require a wire from the brake light circuit?

Gary..If your truck has the stock small cargo light on the cab....There is a sticky on this forum that tells how to install the later OEM third brake light in place of the small one, I did mine...so it should be a 10 second job for you !!..Requires enlarging the hole, and running 2 wires. IIRC...

Jerry - Do you mean using a stock Ford light?

Right..a stock Ford truck light. Clear in the center for cargo light..Red on both ends for third brake light..I think mine was on a an early 90s truck..$10 at the JY. 2 screws..and a little enlarging of the stock cargo light hole. The whole process is on the Forum somewhere...

Jerry - I can't find a sticky on replacing the cargo light with a later model one. Am I missing it?

I did find Bill's statement here that he did it, so will contact him.

Gary..As I recall..one wire to the brake switch at the pedal...and one tied into the brake light wire. It's in the archives somewhere...

Judging by the size of that third brake light, it looks like it's a replacement for the 94-96 trucks, not for the 80-93 trucks. You would need to enlarge the hole in your cab, and drill two new hardware holes in order for it to work.

You're definitely going to have to tap into your brake light circuit in order to make it work.

Are you looking for LED light, or just the factory incandescent? Because the 95-2011 Rangers have the same or a similar Third Brake/Cargo light assembly as the 94-96 F-Series trucks. The 99+ Super Duty trucks have a similar one as well.

Shaun - I hadn't thought about that, but it does look a bit long, doesn't it. As for what I'm looking for, I just thought it would good to have a third brake light to enhance the visibility of the truck at night. And, in keeping with my theme it would be good to use a Ford part. So, are you saying the one from the 95-2011 Ranger would be the best fit? But, it would still require enlarging the hole?

Jerry - Now that you mention it, I actually have this shot in my albums since I posted the pic for you:

But, following your directions I see a much closer shot, and I like that cargo/brake light. You said early 90's?:

However, that had me looking at your interior shots and it raised a couple of questions. First, your console, which you said is from an '86 Bronco, is different than mine from an '88 Bronco. Seems odd that they would be so different. Second, how does your back wall carpet attach and what was it from? I need to do that since the buckets will show off the back wall in spades.

Gary..I took that cargo/brake off a junker..I think it was early 90s..Could be a bit earlier. Not hard to find. The buckets and console was sold to me as "86..?? The carpet is attached by placing it under the molding that runs under the back window. that's all that holds it. Mine was missing..and a long gone member..Uncle Stosh.. found this red one in a junkyard in Pennsylvania..same truck the FORD bumper bar came from. The hole that is for the small cargo light only has to be enlarged about 3/8 inch on each side. Contour is the same.. Piece of cake for you...(The spotlight has a magnetic base..set it anywhere ..Plugs in lighter )

I like the look of that light better than the LED one from LMC. And, I need to go to the salvage for several things, so I'll look for one of those as well. I can take my light with me and just do a comparison for size.

Subscribed. I was just thinking about doing this same modification on my 1985 Lariat.
