Question for the motor Guru's

I'm going to be rebuilding a 292 and plan on really doing it right but what brand of gaskets would be best? I read on here where for a flat head the question of copper gaskets was brought up. I just want everything to be as good as I can do it, or does brand matter now-a- days? Any info would be great, thanks.

Can't go wrong with FelPro. Copper is a '40's thing.

The steel or copper gaskets can be used to raise static compression due to the fact that they are thinner. If you want to burn high octane racing fuel, compression can be raised other ways, such as decking block, milling heads and using domed pistons. It is my opinion that engineers switched away from steel gaskets for good reasons. One typical scenario being that hot or even just "non-posted" heads may tend to distort and develop leaks with rigid steel gaskets. That being typed, I am presently using Fel-Pro Perma-Torque gaskets on the modest horsepower but torque-happy 292 that I'm putting together. It has a static compression of 8.5/1 and will be fine with 87 octane pump gas.

BTW: I've heard (read) nothing but good things about Best Gasket's seals.

we used Best gaskets, mostly because of the front and rear seal they sell.
don't know how they'll work out but they installed without any issues.

Thanks Guys, the block may be decked just to level the top so to speak. I have to take some measurements on deck hight. I read somewhere that the Y block deck hight could be off and I want it all fixed. I am camming it up but compression in the 8's seem low???

Look at Mummert's site for head info. If you want more compression, use the right head. I'm using -113 heads . If you want crazy, buy John's aluminium heads.

I use FelPro gaskets for most apps . Had good luck with them always . I do remember copper gaskets for clerance issues after machine work or to alter compression #.
