That article is almost a year old. Engine options have been announced.
- 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 (Flex Fuel and CNG/LPG capable)
- 3.5L EcoBoost® V6
- 3.2L I-5 Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel
People at my work have been talking about this for months. They discontinued the diesel option in 2010 and wrapped up E-Series production a few years later. That means, either switch to gasoline ambulances for a little while, or go with a new brand. Management decided to give Chevy a try. We have about 5 chevys at my station (compared to about 20 Fords) and people shun the Chevys. They are pretty much universally hated except by a select few. Dodge/Merc makes the Springer which is another popular option, but also, not as welcomed as the Fords. We dont have any, but I have talked to guys from other companies that do.
Each has its own ups and downs but Ford E-Series is the clear winner. Hopefully the Transit will make a good ambulance.

Not with our dept. Have a 2002 Ford that's been a great Ambo, 2003 nothing but junk, 2008 new motor at 36,000 after being pulled numerous times. Dept is now shifting to International chassis. So far so good. I know that are Motorpool is stoked to get rid of the econoline trucks, I took a look into the engine bay at the shop one time of one of our trucks getting new alternators. All I can say is WOW, you couldn't pay me enough to work on them.

We have some with the boxes too, and they do ride stiff. Very bumpy. The trick is air ride suspension. LA city has Dodge 5500s with air ride and it is glorious. Softer than a car. Then it kneels to let you in and out the back which is nice because they are almost dock height.

I use the E series ford vans for our plumbing business and I'm sad to see it go, I just retired our oldest van, 97 e150 with 443k. Tranny lost 2nd, 4th and reverse, but the body was starting to show its age and everything was flat wore out. Maybe ford will bring it back.
AND NOW the E-series vans........BAD CHOICE, FORD!!!
The new Transport van I'm sure is crap just like the Sprinters, and looks so foreign too!

I am not familiar with negative reports on Sprinter reliability and quality, do you have any info/links? We are considering a Sprinter conversion van and from what I have read so far I thought they were high quality.

All our trucks have boxes and have the air dump for the rear. Very nice option. Our newest rig has a Stryker cot lift too. All I can say is very nice. I asked our EMS chief and he said every truck from now on will have them.

We are going to the Ford Explorer Police Utility Interceptor (PUI), and let me tell you, that thing beats the Crown Vic Police Interceptor in every way imaginable. All wheel drive with the V6 EcoBoost, lots more room, far superior braking, better gas mileage, better turn radius....we will never look back.

But they make beri calls very nice. We have a couple units with NICU lifts since we run NICU calls and they can be used like a tommy gate on a truck to get a beri Patients in. We have 2 special beri units that also have 5k warn winches in front of the capitans chair
