Checking transmission fluid

Hi,

I have a 1988 f250 5.8L with a C6 transmission. The Haynes book says that the fluid should be between the two holes in the dipstick when the fluid is cold; and in the checkered area when the engine is warm and idling in park.

When I check it cold it is two to three inches above the checkered area; and I can hardly get an accurate reading when it is hot - it is either way above the checkered area or it is not registering at all.

Any suggestions on how to get an accurate reading for the transmission level?

Thanks, DR
