Compare Fuel Cost 2011-6.2 & 2013 6.7

So I thought that I would compare the regular fuel usage of the new 6.7 to the 2011 6.2 that I traded when I got this one. This is based on the last 2 months with the 6.7 May 29-July29 and the last 2 month with the 6.2 3/17 - 5/17 Fillups..

Now remember I had the 5Star tuner loaded up with the 93 octane perf/tow and drove it hard so the fuel is going to be more expensive than you guys running 87 during the same period. Both trucks driven as daily driver - highway, tow some, city, off road 4x4, idling with Rebel (Lab) in the back seat, etc....

Miles__________ 6.2 - 4029 ----- 6.7 - 4511

Total Fuel______ 93 - 390.56 gal ------ Diesel - 337.73 gal

Fuel Cost______ 93 - $1433.79 ------ Diesel - $1235.97

Ave Fuel Cost__ 93 - $3.67 ------ Diesel $3.65

Ave MPG______ 6.2 - 10.31 mpg ------ 6.7 - 13.35 mpg

Fuel$/Mile_____ 6.2 - $0.35586 ---------6.7 - $0.27399

I am sure some might think this is not scientific - It's not - it is just real world usage. The fancy computer on the 2013 is like a trophy wife - shows some really exciting things (higher mpg -etc.) but the reality is what is listed above - & what the bottom dollar cost associated with it...

Personally I am happy with the change all the way around - & financially it should result in a decrease in fuel costs (maybe $1500/1600 yr @ 20k miles/yr).

On my 2012, CC,4X4,6.7 I have just over 10,000 miles and have averaged 16.7 mpg. I do almost no short trips. Am almost always towing or hauling a heavy load. About the only in town driving I do is to take it in for service.

On my 12, CC, 4x4, SB, 6.7, 12,115 miles, 784gals, 15.45mpg.
a little towing (1,000 miles), 50/50 highway/stop & go.

on my 08 dually, I was just over 10mpg over 30,000, more towing.
best non-towing highway was 13.3
(but I miss the dually stability)

Thanks Crystal. I have been using the Ford cetane booster and seem to get better fuel milage when I do that. Is that generally what is being reported by others. Also, I was wondering if the cetane booster has any effect on soot levels and regens.

Yea thanks Crystal. I was figuring on getting a baseline without and then trying pm22 to see if there was a real economic difference.

If you REALLY want to save at the pump, use fuelrewards.com. My average price YTD is <$1.00 per gallon. I use my fleet account with a $0.10 rebate and actually had a negative statement because I paid $0.019 per gallon and got $0.10 back per gallon for that period.

Fuel cost is one thing. What about the other costs involved with the diesel, higher initial cost, fuel filter changes, more expensive oil changes, DEF fluid etc. makes me wonder what the overall true cost to own the 6.2 vs the 6.7 would be? Which one would have the lower out of pocket cost overall?

Maintenance plans from FoMoCo is they way to offset that. I know it's difficult to believe but off the top of my head, I saved a couple thousand bucks by purchasing the scheduled maintenance plan and was adiment when that time came. The dealer tried to snake their way out of doing some items, but I had documentation to support it.

I don't believe that for most of us it is an economic thing. The final straw for me, after 30 years of driving gasoline powered trucks, was watching the desiel rigs pulling 30 foot horse trailers going by me on the interstate like I was standing still. I don't see how I could ever go back to driving a gasoline powered truck, other than my vintage knock around ranch truck. The enjoyment of driving these rigs for me is worth every penny.

IMHO justification for a diesel boils down to two catagories. #1, if you tow heavy you need a diesel and that is justification. #2 if you want a diesel and you can afford it that is justification. If you aren't in these two catagories a gasser is better for you.

I drove gassers for years - all the guys that I work with said "you need a Diesel" - the towing and other things I do... So I tried a '97 7.3 - I guess it was the only Lemon Ford I ever bought - Ford bought it back in '01... Went back to V-10 then the 6.2... I pushed (Broke) the limits pulling with the 6.2 but it was there when you needed it.

I don't ignore the fact that here the 6.2 is somewhat unpopular in my resale market but I got the "right" deal on selling the 6.2 and going to 6.7.

But also I drive about 20k a year plus my lifestyle may be changing soon where I drive more than that... My only concern if failing sensors that will mess with me in out of the way places.. One place I work the truck is a couple hundred mile from the nearest Ford house..

Initial cost of the diesel is a con against them but while I paid 7k more the rebates when I purchased were like 2000-2500 for Diesel only (not 6.2) plus upon resale (in my local market) the Diesel will fetch a 2-3k premium..

DEF cost is nothing in my book - I paid about what a 12 pack cost for 2.5 gal and 12 pack only last a day or so....
