Hey guys, I was talking to a buddy today and might have a line on some oil. It would be from a donut place that adds chunks of shortening to their fryers. Could this cause a problem in my system, or would all the shortening solidify when cold and be able to be strained out? I would like to have a consistent line on some oil, but not looking to cause any damage to my system.. or my truck (wreck took care of that).


Oh and on a side note crossed 15,000 miles of running on veggie the other day!

 

What kind of kit do you have?

 

No kit, homemade. Heated pickup, heated fuel filter, and electric fuel heater before the fuel hits the rails.

 

I would think as long as you can keep everything hot, you should be okay. But it's going to solidify once it cools down.

You'll also have to be very careful about purging your lines before shutdown.

 

Do you think it would / could settle out during filtering at home? I have a cold upflow settling system. I just wonder if I could let the thick shortening work its way out before it even goes into the tank. While I am good about purging my lines I would rather not worry about it at all.

Oh and I know nothing about shortening, other than it makes donuts delicious. Which is why I ask.

 

I don't really know. Maybe see if you can get a small sample and let it sit for a week or so to get an idea of how it behaves.

I would think you'll have much better results running this during the warm months. If you want to use it in winter you might need to consider HOH fuel lines.

if you are using cold upflow, i doubt the shortening would even make it to your second barrel. But since you have lots of heated components, it wouldn't be a problem in theory. As the other poster mentioned, make sure you do a comprehensive purge. It'd be a shame to clog your veg fuel lines with shortening. If you aren't already running HIH or HOH or at least TOT or TOH, you should probably install that. all my veg rides have TOT, and it heats the veg in addition to the FPHE's i have.

 

PHO is a PITA to filter and in a cold upflow system, your going to hate it. Consider a heat, settle method or heat and centrifuge. Way better than cold upflow.

 

Wonder what happened??

I have burned 'shortening' in my truck. This stuff is SOLID at 80*, but my system has a LOT of heat. After settling and filtering the stuff while it was hot, I put it in my truck. The next AM it was 20* and there was a drip on the top of my tank that was so hard I couldn't push my fingernail in it... Truck ran like it always does!

The biggest problem I see with burning donut oil is looking like the Pied Piper with a line of cops following you around.
