Misfire at idle

Hi everyone,

I've mentioned this a couple of times before but finally got around to taking a video. Has anyone had this happen to them, and if so what was the fix? I want to take it in at some point but can't afford to be without a truck at the moment.

It does this without fail on every cold startup. After a few seconds it smooths out. I see the white smoke most of the time as well, no clue what's causing it.

ON edit: WOW the audio quality is awful. I'll try to shoot another one either tonight or tomorrow.

I don't know about a misfire..a lot of times I will use the reemote start to get the oil circulated before I drive away. What I DO hear is something like w howl from the turbo. The last OP that had that had his turbos replaced. Do you remember seeing that thread?

I have had same issue for quite sometime. The diagnosis on mine was a misfire on cylinder #3. I have't had time to take mine in since I need it every day. It runs fine when warm and pulls good. Just cold starts.

Hi Crazy001,

Send me your information so I can see how to best help. I'll need a PM from you with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name; I'll start researching some options.

I replied to Crystal via PM as requested, and she's notifying the regional customer service rep.

My concern is mainly long-term. Catalytic converter damage can occur with a misfire, so what's going to happen to them over the long run?

this may be part of ford's warm-up strategy in order to reduce emissions on a cold engine. retard the ignition and exhaust camshaft timing to get the cats online very soon after start up.

will be following as well

could this be a oil blow-by issue from the pcv

I know the 4.6 and 5.4 are notorious for oil getting sucked back into the intake. My 2009 Bullet had an oil soaked intake with <6,000 miles...and my 2006 F-150 had the intake oil soaked at 22,000 miles.

alot of guys install catch cans and will collect several ounces of oil over the course of 3-5,000 miles.

seeing that white smoke on start-up makes me think of oil. you guys could have oil collecting in the intake and at idle when the motor is cold, that little bit of oil is getting sucked in.

I'd be curious to see what your looks like where the air feed is bolted to the intake. run an inspection mirror down in there and see how clean/dirty it looks

That is not a misfire. That is normal startup for a direct injection turbocharged gasser. My ecoboost and my Mazda 2.3l Disi turbo both do the same. No worries totally normal

I know what you're talking about, but unfortunately the audio is lousy on that video and you can't hear it. Not sure what happened with the audio on that one, but I will try and get a better one tomorrow morning.

It is definitely misfiring; my wife started the truck on that first clip and commented on how much the truck shook.
