Sometime no reverse

I have a 2003 automatic 6.0 and some times when I put the truck in reverse in wont engage. I can just sit there and rev it up and it won't move. You have to put it in drive then back to reverse for it to work usually works as soon as you do that. Every once in a blue moon you have to do that multiple time for it goes in reverse.

I had exactly the same thing and a fluid flush and change with new filters solved it.

It could be several things. It could be a bad seal in the reverse clutch, a sticky solenoid, or a loose shift lever.

When moving the shift lever is it firm and easy to find each gear? Or is it sloppy? If it is sloppy you need to lay under the dash on the driver's side. Look up the steering column. There are two Torx head screws that hold the shift tube to the column. If they are loose or missing that will cause this.

If it is a stick solenoid new fluid will sometimes fix it. A bad clutch seal requires the trans to come out to be fixed.

The shift lever is firm and clean with finding the gears so I guess I will start with new fluid and filter

Take it in to Ford so they can flush the system and be sure to change BOTH filters. Internal and external.

You want the heated transmission flush at the dealer and make sure they change the external filter.

I am having this same issue. A buddy of mine that owns a transmission shop said what everyone else has. Flush and fluid exchange with new filters. If that doesn't work and no codes, it is more than likely sticking pressure/clutch plates(that is what he called them) in the reverse drum. He also said it could be a busted snap ring in the drum causing issues.

I hope it is just a fluid and filter issue, I just gave him 1800 to rebuild the transmission in my car.

It could just be a weak solenoid or bad o-ring. I don't know a test for it.
