Power steering on a 223

I know there are several kits for the gear box and I got that part covered. I'm gonna go with the Toyota gear box set up. I've done it on my 51 and it worked out well. My questions are. Was power steering available on a 60 with a 223? If it was were can I get the original brackets and even the pump? If its not available what did you guys use for a pump and bracket for a 223? Thanks for all info.

Where did you find the gear box? Cuz my 59 f100 has a 390 with headers and some joker put a dent in the header to clear the factory man box on it (will the dent in the header pipe on the #8 cylinder affect anything)?. But I want power steering and am totally stumped as to how to set it up. Steering is completely different then my 70's truck so none of the extra PS gear boxes I have will work so it seems

There have been threads on using a Toyota steering box over the last several years, so some have done it. And in a previous thread it was noted that PS was a dealer installed accessory. It was probably pretty rare, so for the pump and mounting brackets it would be a do it yourself project, and not really that tough once you picked the pump to use.

For what it is worth, the only 57 to 60 Ford trucks that I have seen power steering on were F 750 and up with the ram type assist. And just about every one of those leaked like the Exxon Valdez.

Yea I was trying to use either a 78/79 4x4 gear box from a f250, or a smaller box I have from a econoline. But the way the steering arm on the axle is and the tie rod is on these old trucks it won't work I don't think

I'm gonna go with the Toyota set up but they say you need a pitman for 57-60 and the 53-56 wont work. Nobody has an arm for 57-60 that has Toyota splines. Whats difference in pitman arms? Should I get 53-56 kit and mod the arm?

I never try to place a p/s on a 223; but would a 300cid p/s bracket and pump work? Also got to take into consideration the pulley on the crank needing a place for the belt.

Try these guys, when I did mine I called them because all they listed was for Cebby ends for the drag link. I told them what I had and they sent the arm and a split adaptor for my (F250 4x4) drag-link (which I think is a 7 degree taper). Works great!

Thanks. 69 bucks not bad. If CPP doesn't have one I'll buy from them.

Cpp Has the correct arm and I bought it today for $59 bucks. Midfifty told me they will keep the arm from the 53-56 kit they sold me and credit me the difference. Midfifty is awesome and great people to deal with. knowledgeable and friendly. I can t thank them enough.
For the record the Draglink on the 53-56 is a ball connection and the 57-60 is a tierod end. But you all knew that.
Power steeering pump and pully from Summit racing should be at my door on monday so I can fab something up.
Wish me luck... Gonna start cutting steering parts out as soon as kit comes.

They say they only got 86 and newer pitman arms. Got a part number for the one you got? What box did you use? 79 to 84?

I am dam poor at keeping records. But just checked my emails. It was october of 2010 and the guy I talked to at WFO was Del Westerlund. No part numbers but I think I ordered the fj arm and when it came in it was wrong so I called Del and returned the arm they re-drilled it and added a pinch type sleeve that had the tapper I needed. Sorry I am of little use.

I just called back and Del no longer works there but Trevor does and he will remember how it all went down to get it done for you. According to who answered the phone Trevor or Travis ( I don't remember) Is a genius when it comes to these things and has an awesome memory. Unfortunately he is off until Monday. Thanks for the follow up. I really appreciate it. I love this site.
