Just got my 400 back from machine shop...What would you do?

Hey guys, I want to post pics not sure if it will work.[IMG][/IMG]As the title says I just picked it up thursday afternoon before work didn't have time to check anything out do anything just take it home and drop it off. I got off work Thursday night I was ready to call the machinists cell phone . I have calmed down breathed and looked at my original work order from 06 when I had done this the 1st time. I had less money in that than I do now from these guys 9 months total at their shop.
I can't believe they let this thing go like this, crank was suppose to be polished, its rusted. Said they put rotating assembly in and checked all installed heights on pistons hard to believe with rust on crank journals. #3 cam bearing nicked pretty nicely and lifter area looks like someone chewed on it. Cylinders not sure if pics show it very well gouges going down cylinders on 3 of the 8 can bearly grab them with a fingernail but they were not like that when they left, just wanted a hone ran through it(engine had 250miles on it since first build) due to diffrent rings. Rotating assembly has no markings of any to indicate it had been balanced. the scale in the water jackets let alone the freeze plug in the jacket . The deck is rusted, broken head off coolant drain, the rust on the block...
What they were suppose to do, hot tank, magnaflux, freeze plugs, oil galley plugs, cam bearings(TMI), line hone mains, install ARP rod bolts resize rods, hang new pistons, gap rings and install on pistons, balance rotating assembly, check installed height and square on deck(MLS head gaskets and TMI 0 deck height pistons). No head work, no boring, pretty standard stuff, bad when I get a call asking what way the pistons get put in on a cleveland style engine.
What would you guys do? I am ready to go in and tell him to shove it give me half of my money back and have him pay to have it fixed right by a as I know now a shop here in Michigan thats professional. Someone help me post pictures I want it to be seen What Motor Rebuilders in Toledo, OH does.

Thank you,
Curtis

While its difficult, put on your poker face, talk to the owner, it may very well be an employee who was trying to get back at the shop befor departing.....if they are humble- great, if not, I'm sure you paid over $1k...then it is fraud,,,file criminal charges directly against the owner. (IMHO of course)

Well there was a 2nd freeze plug in the block, got both out there was no sign that they tried to remove them just put new one to it and knock it in. I cleaned the decks off and checked at least they are square, ran tap down head bolts had to fill them with thread cutting oil there was so much rust on them was stopping cleaning just amazing.
Tuesday a guy that is local known him for some years retired from ford(not exactly sure what he did but still has ties deals with new stuff still, always building ford pushrod engines)said he is coming back in town cut me off in conversation when I told him there are scores in the cylinders he wants to go over it before I decide to do anything, being the engine is .030 over .040 is max I won't go anymore and deal with hot spots.
Pretty sad my parents ordered the truck this engine came out of in Nov 76 first tear down in late 05 and machine work done turned into a 400 and late 2012 is when this thing gets screwed up. I just can't believe they would tell me all 8 cylinders pistons are sitting .008 in the hole come in to pick it up #5 is in the block and thats it got to looking at the rest they were not put in, rod journals are rusted.
After my friend and I go over everything is when I will be in contact with this gentleman that runs the place and see how it goes from there I don't want to deal with court but the heads alone I have $2000 in and thats just pulling them out of the box, not some 5hp honda small throw away engine. The rate things look my 351w I just went through that needed no machine work is in better shape I wanted to drop this thing in and run it for well couple hundred thousand miles not a couple thousand. . I may be 28 years old and not look it I am not a sucker and won't be burned like this.

Thank you,
Curtis

I would call tim & ask him where you measure the pistons on the skirt and find out just how much clearance each piston has on it. Get a bore gauge and mics reading in .0001" I'd find it hard to believe the stock bore is not worn, let alone have enough room left to hone as much as someone did there to completely remove the ridge. I wouldn't be suprised if those cylinders are .004 or more over the limit now. If you are going to buy pistons always figure on boring the block. I'd get it decked to, even if you aren't looking to zero deck it a clean up pass I'd always recomend. No sence in risking a leak.

Well, the good the bad and the hmm I forgot about that. I had friend of mine come take a look(known ford builder around here believe I talked about him previously in the posting). All cylinders are round in spec the cylinder that has the groove all the way down may be visible to the eye but cylinders were just honed not bored out, engine had at the most 250 miles since built last but after talking to Tim it clicked.
I forgot besides not happy with the TQ why I tore down(its been that long) my thrust plate for the cam bolts had backed loose(only thing that made sense was being I gave them blue locktite was threads in block had oil in them) reguardless the distributor gear was destroyed and sent through so that explains the marks in cylinders. Not a fault of the machine shop.
Today I went down calmly talked to the shop manager handed him the freeze plugs he was non to happy, proceeded to tell me of a 7.3 a gentleman that worked for him around the same time was also working on putting cam bearings in only had them 3/4 of the way in owner brought it back showed the manager and after that that guy no longer worked there.
Explained that crank was suppose to be polished and it looks the exact same way as when I dropped it off and I do not believe it was balanced(he sends everything to be balanced to another shop, Bob Fall would not touch it with it looking the way it does). So he is personally going over everything reinspecting and what needs adressed will be taken care of so aside from everything is being taken care of.
Mark this engine was not at STD. bore, <250miles on .030. all cylinders were good clearence not too tight not too loose when we checked them out this morning(have measurements wrote down in the garage but too tired to go grab them) I offered my bore gauge and mic he insisted on his own.
John that one couldn't do that alone that would be you tube material.
