Got a new EGR valve for the truck, yay! Turbo gernaded, boo!! LOL
OK, have no idea how (if?) these two things can be related, but here goes. I bought this truck with the EGR valve deleted, therefore the cooling fan wasn't operating properly, and the turbo never did the VGT sweep. I first suspected the VGT was stuck (the truck had sat for a long time) so I pulled the turbo and serviced it per TSB. It was in pretty bad shape, but wasn't stuck. Anyway, put it back together, and drove it while waiting on the EGR. Truck had power problems and hesitation at anything above 3k rpm, but just took it easy until the EGR got here. Well, got it today! Installed it, drove around til the truck warmed up, then shut it down, disconnected the batteries, and did the 10 minute discharge. After 10 minutes, connected the batteries, did the power cycle thing, and started it up. WOW! I can hear the turbo VGT cycling. After about 30 seconds, i hear a slight hiss coming from the back of the turbo after the VGT cycled, and thought 'huh, must not of got the back exhaust clamp tight enough, need to adjust that' About the time that thought went thru my noggin the VGT cycled again, then there was a fairly large puff of blue smoke from back by the turbo! Engine almost died, but recovered. I managed to get it back in the shop, shut it down, and now of course it won't start. I pulled the intake pipe off the turbo and the wheel spins, but feels like it lightly rubs now. Also, the shaft does not have end play, but now DOES have lateral play.
Anyone hear of this one before?
