My first F250, tips to keep running.

Hi everyone, I am new to the site but have visited it many times. I just bought an 06 F250 with the 5.4 and the truck is sitting on 28,950 miles. I love this body style and have always wanted one so I bit the bullet and said why not. The owner before me has ran 5w-30 in the truck since he bought it new, should I be concerned, should I switch to the 5w20 and does anyone have any tips or tricks to keep my dream truck running great. Thanks for you help in advance. Its great to be around people who love their ford trucks.

leave the truck running at the oil it came with. I've been told by other mechanics unless truck is asking for it pretty much by gear wear....leave using the same motor oil. I been using on mine 10 w 30 synthetic blend motorcraft ...which was what they instructed me from ford when i got it used as 2nd owner...

An '06 5.4L would use SAE 5W-20 oil. Use a good quality synthetic oil.

Comming up on my first oil change with 57k miles on an 02 V10. What's your recommendation Redford. How do you know so much about these trucks?

The 5w20 is the OEM spec and I abide by this as well on my 2002 f350 5.4l

There is alot of discussion here and on bobistheoilguy forums about the ford modular proper oil. Some are running 10w30 and some are running 0w20 from what I gather. I don't feel safe at either of those.

From my reading, I understand that the modular engines have small or narrow oil passages. To flow properly and to maximum possible efficiency the manufacturer recommended oil is oil I plan on using.

I like how the truck is running nice and quietly on Pennzoil yellow bottle conventional 5w20, but recently picked up some Mobil Super High Mileage synthetic blend to see how that works for the next few thousand. I have run Mobil 1 full synthetic to do a "cleaning" on a short OCI of about 2500 miles, the oil was dark upon removal. The PYB is still golden after 2000 miles. Alot of folks use motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 and have a few hundred thousand on them.

A suggestion I would stick with is using a STOCK OEM oil filter (I think yours is the fl820-s) there is ALOT of discussion about this and I can't in good confidence recommend anything else, unless you want to spend around $15-20 for a super high end filter. The OEM filter has alot of advantages at less than $4 at walmart or online.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic.

Why do I know so much? I am an awesome super hero with knowledge of Super Duty trucks as my super power.

IMHO, the greatest issue is using the correct weight oil...while the heavier weight oil is great for the basic engine components, it plays "H" on items like the hydraulic tensioners, etc.

No, it doesn't hurt to switch from synthetic to composted dinosaur oil and back again.

Tell me if I'm wrong but, the main difference between the synthetic & dino oil is that the oil molocules in synthetic are more similiar size since they are created that way, while less consistency is found in the dino oil. For the first 2500 to 3000 miles or so they both behave pretty much the same, however beyond that the dino oil begins to break down & blackens. This makes the synthetic better if you can't stop everything for an oil change right at 3000 miles or sooner.

By the way, great feedback Jameson JC!!!

Redford, watch out for radioactive meteors like the one that gave you your power when it hit you in your Super Duty. What ever caused it I'm just jealous. Can't seem to find the time to learn enough about it. Motorcraft or Mobile 1 syn it is.
