oil pump shaft

Just recently put head gaskets on my motor. New oil pump also. I ran the pump using a drill and had good pressure. Put in the distributor and started it. No oil pressure at all. I can pull distributor and run oil off shaft with a drill, but none with distributor in. I also pulled oil pump and re-installed. Is there any different length shafts cause I changed the pump?

There is not a different length shaft. Is the distributor rounded out?

Did it work before you replaced the head gaskets and pump?

The end of the distributor shaft may not have dropped down onto the oil pump drive shaft. The pump shaft may have a little wobble. When inserting the dist. make sure it is seated onto the block surface. If it wont drop fully into place a bump of the starter, or manual advance of the crank may help.

Did you replace oil pump drive shaft? Apparently a batch of new ones were assembled, packaged, and sold with the retaining washer on the wrong end.

Sorry didn't get back sooner. Work and vacation has taken all my time recently. I bought a new shaft, and also bought a shaft for a 390. They are both the same size, but the 390 shaft is 1/4 in longer. When I originally pulled the distributor, it had no seal and was pucking oil on top of the engine. The gasket set came with a big rubber tapered seal I installed in the hole. I think it raised the distributor enough to lose contact. With the filter off I could crank the motor one time and pump oil. Next turn of the crank and nothing. Towards which end does the retaining washer go?

It goes in from the pump ("bottom") end and the washer/retainer keeps the shaft from pulling out of the pump drive coupling when the distributor is removed. See the second post here:
Y-Block 292 oil pump drive shaft question - The Ford Barn

The one I bought two months ago was wrong.

If I'm not mistaken, the distributor does not use a gasket.

I don't use one but my distributor is a Motorcraft which has an o-ring.

Oil can also be coming from the valley pan and I think a bolt hole in the intake flange at the back of the head. I think that bolt hole goes to a pushrod hole but I can never remember.

If it's actually puking from the distributor, I think there is some other issue.
