Why you want to upgrade your TS Trans Filter

I think I'll post this in the Super Duty forum too. As they say, a picture tells a thousand words. Here's a couple pictures of the '08+ Torqshift's internal transmission filter. Ours only has a screen for a filter and the new one has a nice pleated filter PLUS a fine SS screen with a bypass valve, incase the pleated filter plugs. The upgrade will allow 100% oil filtration versus about 10% of the oil that the front filter sees. So if you have both I guess you get 110% filtration!

You need both the filter and the '08+ pan for the upgrade, gasket is re-usable. Tousley has both for about $93 w/o shipping...

Would have been nice if the late model trans pans had been cast aluminum like the diff covers...

I know it's not needed but it would look cool.

Thanks very much -- not too many folks do that. BTW, here are the part #s:

(Pan) 8C3Z-7A194-B, (Filter) 8C3Z-7A098-D

I wonder how much that A/T filter bypasses... most do not realize just how often an engine oil filter goes into bypass, especially cold starts.

You know, I don't know what the '08+ interval is, but I thought it was higher than our 30k, but maybe it was oil every 30k and filter every 60k? In another thread here somewhere, Mark Kovalsky weighed in with an interesting tidbit: and that was he'd never seen an internal transmission filter clog, even in ones run up to 300k miles! (not a direct quote mind you). I'm taking a different path and once the new filter is in there I'm going to 20k dump and fills only. I'm not going to bother trying to find someone with a hot flush machine, etc.

I have a couple of external filters I bought before deciding to go this route. If the housing comes off with no problem I'll use those too and when they're gone leave the external housing empty...

That's true, but I was speaking about the older filters. I do not know how long this newer filter will last. I suspect A LOT less than 300k miles because it is a very fine filter. The old filters were mainly boulder catchers.

I have a deep B&M trans pan on my 05 F250, does the filter need to be near the bottom of it or just immersed in the fluid?

Most of the deep sump pans come with a filter (intake) extension, you might check with B&M on if they have an '08+ one, or if the one they should have supplied with your original pan is the same. But then get the new filter -- it is really a: "why not?" question...
