What works best for locking the hood?

I know there are some unique approaches. Unfortunately the search didn't find them for me.

 

The stock hood latch works fine,for over 50 years now.Just feeling the need to throw cash around? I'll put my catchers mitt on!LOL

 

JC Whitney used to make one. IIRC it locked with the ignition switch.

I may go with something similar myself. Maybe we should google Rugged Ridge?
Another viable option is the old, venerable piece of chain and a padlock. As far as vehicle theft protection I've used an electric fuel pump with a hidden on/off switch.

 

Not to belabor a point - BUT - the hood on my 59 is so heavy , I cannot imagine it blowing open at the speeds most of us drive our old trucks.Now, if you've got an expensive motor or engine components, that's another story.

 

My concern is more of someone opening the hood and stealing, messing, manipulating things inside it.

I wouldn't cut the hood...

 

Me neither. I'm working my brain to come up with a cable and a padlock arrangement. It'll wake me up in the middle of the night when the right idea strikes

 

Here's what I fabbed up for my mustang....(I do have a pat. pending filed) but I have no issue with someone building one for themselves.



Inside the box is a bar that slide with the use of a cable that blocks the locking forks from moving...in essence...the hood is locked.

 

I went Olde Schoole & put a Chain & Padlock in place.

 

That's prolly the way I'm gonna go. But I'll use a tailgate cable I have. I'm not sure what it came from, but I'm like many here. I have Pack Rat Syndrome, a.k.a. PRS. How many of us here who build trucks are also afflicted? Don't be afraid to admit it. Acknowledging the problem is the first step to recovery.

 

You think a 1957/60 hood is heavy? 1961/66 is heavier and people tend to slam it down, which over time, causes the hood lock plate to bend downwards.

Sooner or later, the hood flies up! Same scenario applies to 1957/60 and 1967/79's as well. You know how you can tell? Look at the rear of the hood where it meets the cowl panel.

If the hood is higher than the cowl, hood has flown up, which causes the 'weak sister' hinges to stretch. Lotsa luck aligning the hood with stretched hinges.

Hood flew up so often on "red pig" (so called cuz Ralph Willams Ford's beat to death 1957 F100 parts truck had a 'Col Flashman' Rustoleum paint job), that we installed a chain/padlock to keep it from doing so.
