Need input on new compressor wheels and surge

I have finally eliminated surge when towing my heavy 5er by going with a van turbo with ported compressor housing. I am tempted by the increased low-end boost of the new 6/6 wheel from riffraff and/or dieselsite, but am curious about how well it deals with the surge when towing. I am thinking of offloading the ported housing for the new wheel if it will work to eliminate the surge.

If you keep then ported housing and go with a ww2 or clays billet wheel your gonna have more air flow than with a stock housing cause the ported housing has a 4" inlet. JMO

The "ported" compressor housing STILL has a ~3" inlet. The additional 1/2" radius is not used for induction.

I stand corrected then! I thought i read somewhere about it flowing a little more air but must have read it wrong.

to the OP, I apologize for the misleading info. But i have read that either wheel has gotten rid of the surge problem. I know that one for sure! haha

I'm fairly certain that the noise level with the ported housing and the new compressor wheel would be too much to handle. That's why I'm considering swapping the two.

We were very happy with the Gen2 WW on Mike's truck. He had terrible surge that was helped by a 1.0 exhaust housing, but not 'cured'. We swapped wheels when installing Stage 3 injectors and there is NO surge now. The performance is impressive. Mike would have to comment about the noise level...

Look forward to seeing y'all again!!!

Jason, was Mike's surge at high boost levels at WOT, or the kind at 15psi or so when under load? I always got the latter and I don't want to do anything that would put me back in a situation where I have to avoid that by feathering the pedal like I had to do pre-ported housing. Right now I can just drive it and I never experience surge. I just don't like the lag of the van turbo.

We are really excited about seeing y'all, too. The boys will have a blast!

We'll have to get Mike to give us the whole story, but his surge was ugly and consistent. AFAIK, there is no surge at all now...
