You never can have enough roof....30Dx40L (30'work bench) with a 12Dx40L lean to on the back. And a few carports, cheap, quick and no property tax on them....

What is you plan for a overhead lifting device inside? I have this 24'x6" I beam and plan to concrete the last 2 bays someday.

Pardon the mess, my shop trolls are lazy, and my family thinks its a free storage place at times. lol

Remember to wire 220 in more than one place, like where even you might have to plug in a old stick welder. Put the compressor in a different room or wall it in.

What is the plan for heat? I use to use a wood stove got tire of waiting for it to get warm, so I use a kerosene torpedo heater. It is insulated and finished inside so it gets warm in 5 min.

Also what are you planning on coating the floor with? Something to repel oil, grease and most automotive fluid. I'll go look at the 5 gal bucket of stuff I got, it works great and was applied with a garden type sprayer.

See the 2nd pic? Under that shop light there is a 6" square beam is setting/welded on top of 6" well casing (you can see one pipe by the ladder), that was my original set up.

Once I had a vehicle under it I had no room to work on the sides so after a while and I got a good deal on a 24'x6" I beam. Brought it home on a 16' utility trailer...

I put 2 wooden 6x6 posts on the front entrance, see the doubled up posts? I would of rathered hung it under the rear square support and the front 4" I beam so I could of uses my trolley all the way but...

I put that 24' beam up there BY HAND/come alongs/ratchet straps and wound up setting the back end on top of the square cross beam and then used the 4" I beam as my cross beam to rest the 6" on top of the 4" I beam setting on top of the 6x6 wood posts.

Bottom line I have about 18' of usable I beam to trolley back and forth on. See the extra sticking out the front end, it has a place to attach a elec light weight winch to pick motors from one truck bed to another.

I put it in with and attached it to the existing building support structures. That made it easy to brace, get your barn built and then find some uprights that are in line with your main (I'd like to do all my heavy lifting right here).

Either 6" well casing pipe (its cheap) uprights, and a 4" or 6" square or I beam cross support here and then decide on the big main ones length.

My front cross support has some extra hanging of the other side if case I need to lift something off in the bay.

3 ton dolly and chain lift from Harbor freight, its a personal set up not, for a business, and suits my needs. I can get you more pics of the set up, if you want?

Its been so long I can't remember on the 2 6" uprights and 6" square tubing I used in the back, I got it at a farm auction used. You can always use old telephone poles for up rights?

I know I paid like maybe 100 bucks for the 24' 6" I beam and the 14' 4" I beam together from my local scrap yard. They threw in the 6x6 posts....

Skip you being in Alaska I am sure everything is $$$ up there? I'll take some more pic tomorrow of the set up I have.

i have a 4 ton heat & air unit for my shop. I am using 6 inch insulation in the walls & 12 inches in the ceiling. I have 5 /4 plug 20 amp circuits 6/ 240 plugs & single plugs for each stationary tool. I used almost every circuit in a 200 amp panel. I have a 130 plug every 4 ft on my walls. I have planned this shop for years. It has all the good ideas from my friends shops & the fixes for problems I saw in their shop. I have a delta dust vac to remove sawdust. I am covering the walls & ceiling with 7/16 osb. I will have four 8 ft florescent lights units spaced 5 ft apart down the center on the ceiling. I will take pics this weekend to show my progress.

Sounds like heat, air, elec and insulation is covered, what about a lifting sys? Or recessed tie down ring in the floor?
