2005 F-2 Super Duty: 6.0L ::: Best Wheel & Tire Setup for 5th. Wheeling?

I have a standard cab 2005 Super Duty 2 door 2 wheel drive truck with the 6.0L Diesel and have been running nice looking (looks only) 18" wheels with Goodyear Eagle GT II P285/60 18's. I am retiring at the end of this year and planning to pull a fiver but will probably need to change out the wheels and tires for something more practical.
What I'd like to know is, what the factory wheel size was and if that size is the optimum wheel for a tow vehicle? At this point, I can choose whatever I want to change out to and I want the smartest setup.

The Bat Machine!

Any input appreciated. Morgan

Take a look at this document for stock wheel/tire info:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...essd-exlbb.pdf

There were different options available. All were at least capable of the axle rating on the truck. Your F250 had around a 6k rear axle rating, so each tire had to be rated for at least 3k. The lowest rated tires they used had 3,195# rating I believe. I would want something a little better than that.

Your existing tires might be rated for that. I'm not sure those custom wheels are. Can't tell just from your pics.

I like the 18 x 8" upgraded wheels for fiver pulling. You can probably find some take-offs by watching Craigslist. Make sure you use an E load rated tire and you should be good to go.

F-2 Wheel Choice for Fiver?!!

Hi and thanks for the great response. When you say "you like the 18 8 wheels for fiver" are you saying that in your opinion, I may be able to use my existing setup with the tall mags? Thanks, Morgan

OK cool.. that is exactly what I want too! I can appreciate that most folks out there do not know what they are doing. I've seen them going down the road with big slide in's wobbling back and forth and I've even seem F-1's pulling huge trailers that are way out of the limit of the vehicle. I'll check that out. Thanks again, M

I don't know anything about those wheels you have. They look like that have more than standard setback, which isn't good. I personally would also insist on a wheel that is hub-centric, not lug-centric. And most aftermarket wheels are lug-centric, while all OEM hubs are hub-centric.

What I was saying is that I like the 18x8" wheel better than the 17x7.5", simply because they are a higher load rated wheel and tire. Even though a 17" can match the axle rating on an F250.
