AOD Problems, or is it speed sensor problems???
Guys,
I have a 1994 F-150 Supercab XL w/302 and an AOD. The speedo jumps every now and then, the ABS light is on (steady), and it shifts hard and seemingly quick, into second gear (always). Also, cruise control won't hold a steady speed (fluctuates up and down), and it comes out of gear pretty often (any gear, any speed, any time). Are all of these symptoms related? Could it be the speed sensor? The dealer told me that there is a sensor on the rearend and one on the tranny that could be causing this. The dealer also said that it could be the speedo in the dash. Any idea which one could be the culprit?
Also, I got a price on the above parts, all seem bearable except the speedo. One sensor was $13, and the other was around $45. Also, the dealer told me that I had to buy the whole instrument cluster, I couldn't buy just the speedo module. Also, this sounds weird, the price on the whole cluster w/o tach is around $350, but the price for the whole cluster w/tach is around $175. Does that sound correct? Can I buy the one with the tach and install it in my truck that does not have a tach. That would be a real nice upgrade.
I can do all of the work myself, I'm just not familiar with the new electronic speedos. This is the first problem I've ever had with my truck since I bought it used in 1996.
I appreciate any of your help.

AOD Problems, or is it speed sensor problems???
Start with the sensor in the rearend, this will cause your speedo to start jumping and also make your ABS light stay on. very simple to change. pull the plug off, a 10mm socket, loosen the bolt that hold it in, pull it out and and install the new one. Drive and see what happens, I should that fix the majority of the problems. the Sensor is right middle and above the rearend.

Here's the lowdown!!! The sensor solved the ABS light problem. The speedo appears to stay still, NO JUMPING! But the tranny still comes out of gear every now and then.
Is this a speedo problem or a tranny problem?
I'm at the end of my rope.

AOD Problems, or is it speed sensor problems???
If its an AOD, your detent cable is critical to the tranny, it runs your shift points and pressure. If this cable breaks, the transmission will usually cause alot of promblems in 3rd and 4th gear. Also I know on older fords with AODs the nylon bushing on the cable was proned to wearing out and causing promblems. Just something to check.

Just so you know, if you get a gauge cluster that is the same year as your truck, you can install it with a tach and it will work. If you get one from a dealer, they have to program it and everything, but you could do that too. The speedo jumping and cruise control problem are related. If you noticed, the cruise with fluctuate with the needle bouncing. The speedo is tapped into the system becuase the cruise needs to know how fast you are going. You can't use cruise under 30mph and it will shut off cruise if the speed drops 10? mph or something close to that. Just some info :-)
