Any tips to shift NP205?

I rebuilt my NP205 and it seems to index fine out of the truck -- but when I put it in the truck, it's a completely "pull and pray" every time I need to get it into a different gear. Sometimes I can feel a firm click or two but I never know where it's going to end up....

Sometimes all the way up clicks it right into 4L and sometimes all the way down is still in neutral. Sometimes it shifts while in park, sometimes in neutral and sometimes only while I'm in drive while I "blip" the throttle to try and get it to shift.

Usually, every time I'm about ready to drive off the road in anger, she'll click into the gear I'm looking for.

It's a 460 w/ a C6 and a divorced NP205. Any tips??

First, is the plastic shifter collar bushing good? That tiny little part can make the difference in the feel.

Where/what is this? I've not seen any plastic bushing anywhere in my linkage.

It goes on the bolt that goes into the adapter. Under the cab, it is where the actual shifter handle attaches.

Ive had a bunch of trucks with 205 t cases in them.......Ford, Dodge, Chevy, GMC, International......Most of the manual tranny ones seemed to shift easily and precisely, while at least half the Auto's were a pain in the ***, maybe its just coincidental?

Good point. What does the owner's manual say about shifting with an auto? I always just pushed in the clutch before shifting the 205, but don't know about an auto. Maybe slip it into neutral first?

I usually try park, neutral, reverse, drive and then shift back and forth between them while trying to get the t-case to nudge into gear. Eventually (and with enough cursing) it will work.

Just thought there had to be an easier way!

I've got the same issue exactly. Always thought it was my lift though. My old 79 with a standard was smooth as butter. I'm going to look at the plastic thing though now!

Ughhh.... Shifted into 4-low last night to pull some stumps and can't get it out. Drove around the block 3 times trying R/N/D/Park and yanking, cursing and punching the shifter. Crawled under it afterwards and had the girlfriend try to push on it and it's just not going.....

Did you unlock the front hubs?

You know what... I just remembered that I didn't! I saw a thread on here that talked about it being OK to leave them locked full-time if you wanted to. Maybe that is giving me problems behind the auto?

It's fine to leave the hubs locked full time, but when you want to disengage 4wd it's sometimes necessary to first unlock the hubs...

Though more often than not you can get away with leaving the hubs locked and disengage 4wd just fine.

Its usually takes a little pressure and a blip of the throttle for me and mine. Try that and have you tried it with the truck reverse? Have you tried to turn the truck off and leave the trans in N ?

"Drive around the block" I hope it was NOT on pavement. Was it this way before you rebuilt it?
