what is my truck doing?

I have an 09 F250 6.4 PSD. A little history on the truck. I bought it used with 32k miles jan 2011. Since I bought it we have been faithful about oil changes and fuel filter changes (last did both approx 2000 mi ago). These have been done at the ford dealership. We are also pretty good about draining the water monthly (always very little to none in it). I also run Diesel kleen+Cetane boost in it with most fuel ups (unless I ran out and haven't been able to get to store) It has a known regen issue where it regents frequently especially in cold wet weather and smokes badly when doing so in the cold wet weather. When I did the last oil and fuel filter change thy also updated the programming as per a service bulletin for that issue. It still regens approx 1 x week and for about 23-26 mi of highway each time (I drive 30 mi each way to work, mostly highway). I tow a 7000 lb travel trailer approx 1x month a few hours each way (we will be driving it NC to FL in aug towing the trailer).

ok now to the current issue, I have been noticing the truck off and on suddenly feeling like someone is pulling on it to slow it down and then just as suddenly it almost jumps and stops doing it. It can do it randomly or when going in and out of regen. I notice less power when in regen Also. Is this a fuel issue, tranny issue, regen issue, or what? I have 60K on the truck and a 5yr/100,000k extended warranty. Should i be worried about towing my trailer to disney from NC next month? Thanks

excessive regens is usually due to an overfueling type of a condition. Or perhaps overboosting.

I think they should be checking your fuel trims.

ok, dumb it down for me a bit. What is a fuel trim? Do you think these 2 issues are related? Does this sound like a warranty thing?

sounds like a warranty thing to me. Basically I think (keyboard diagnosis) that you have have something going on pushing too much fuel.

They can check the injectors and watch them via computer and check the fuel pressure too.

ok thanks, that might explain my crappy (and getting worse) fuel mileage. I'm averaging 12-13 mpg with riding mostly highway.

I would log regens, length, space between them.

Hand calculated mpgs over the route you travel, specify

And boost pressures. Loaded or unloaded. Chart it for a week and present it.

Mine along time ago was doing more regens then I thought it should. It was also pushing more boost then it used to it.

End result was a new high pressure turbo as it was out of spec. No check engine lights or codes. Just my butt saying something was not right. Dealer did a diagnostics and that is what it was. Warranty repair.

no lugging that I can recall.

I am sure someone else will see this thread and give you some ideas as well.

Have you checked your air filter? have you changed it?

they checked it with oil change but it hasn't needed a new one since we've had it.

id be curoius how the air filter is. you should be able to read the filter minder to see if it has been sucking to hard also. its mounted right on the air filter housing. i do believe they had some that where too sensitive tho if i recall correctly. but 30k miles depending on the driving conditions, changing that filter could be a very easy quick fix to see if thats all it is.

I'm sorry asquared that i cant help you with your problem, but i do have a question for the other guys that replied to this thread. My turbo was boosting normal before i deleted my dpf (22psi Max usually). Now, i can get it up to 30-35psi when i step on it in overdrive to pass someone. I have the DPF-R with stock settings. No power increase from programmer, just deletes the dpf only. Does it sound right that you produce more boost just by deleting dpf? My air filter pressure thing on the housing was sucked it quit i bit, so i know its sucking really hard.
