If it's diesel rated, sure. But if it doesn't have the proper additives, I'd expect it to foam when put through the paces by the HPOP.

Agreed. If there's no other use for it dump it in the fuel tank.

Our HEUI injectors are very picky about the oil. I wouldn't do that to Stinky.

I'd probably wait and run it in the winter since it will make for easier starts, but if he just can't wait, tell him to dump it in. I don't know if I would tow heavy in the summer months with it, but daily driving should be fine. (my version of summer might be different than others based on my location)

Rotella T in 10w-30 meets the Ford spec. The owners manual even calls for using 10w-30 in our engines during colder (really colder) weather.

Personally I wouldn't worry about. CJ-4 10w-30's seem to work fine. I have run Rotella 10w-30 in the summer without any issue.

Not exactly the same but very similar here is a rolling thread of UOA's from a guy who runs nothing but conventional diesel rated (CI-4+ and CJ-4) in his 6.0 (one of the few operating environments that is worse than our 7.3 on oil)... UOAs look great even when run in the summer heat.

thats a little more reassuring lol it was a pretty long day, we did shocks front and rear, sway bar bushings, 2 tie rod ends, gauges, fuel filter, brakes and rotors all the way around, and saved the oil for last and I didnt even look to make sure he got 15w-40 and i felt like such an idiot, but i didnt realize it until the 3rd gallon we put in when i noticed it was a different container than the used one of 15w-40 i had on the shelf. its his first 7.3 so he was gonna take it to a shop to have all that done but i figured i could save him some money but i feel bad that i wasnt paying to close attention.

Again thanks for the quick responses! and like I said hes gonna change it in 3k miles

He will be more than fine. At 3k he will be dumping out perfectly usable oil with plenty of life left in it, like the vast majority of us do.

10w-30 is the direction that diesel oil is heading nowadays IMHO. A significant number of OEMs (ie. Detroit Diesel and in Ford's 6.7) come with 10w-30 in them from the factory for its fuel economy benefits. And when PC-11(successor oil to the current CJ-4) hits the shelves there is almost no way a 40wt operating oil will meet the new lower HTHS viscosity requirements of sub 3.5. So expect to see more 30 operating wght oils in stores in the future.

I know the HEUI system is a bit different but there are too many UOAs to post showing even under a fair amount of heat a 10w-30 is fine in a 7.3 and a 6.0 application.

Diesel 10w30 is the oil Ford puts in new diesel trucks at the factory (your truck had it originally). I special ordered and used it for the first 50K miles i owned my truck.
It is a non-issue.
