Holy memory lane Mark. How did you manage to obtain those? Those are actually the workshop books given to us during in-class training at the Ford school. I haven't seen THAT in a long while.

Well I have to think you for some thing to read while I keep the cats calm
on the 4th. They really don't like the pop, boom and bang. I do but freaked out cats
I don't so I watch the cats and fireworks on the tv.

Along with all my certificates all boxed up, I too have all those books somewhere collecting dust as I write. Kind of reminds me that I need to clean out and organize my pile when I feel motivated.

Too bad they don't pay very well at all. There are three diesel techs that are currently needed in my neck of the woods that no one is jumping at the opportunity. One has to wonder why?

Most people think that when they walk into a dealership everyone they see is fully trained. Sadly that is seldom the case. Useually only one or two are fully trained or certified, the majority are just wrench turners.
Skiled in their own way you tel them what they need to change and they can do it, but to diagnose it on their own not a chance.

A lot of companies say they have certified techs, have applied and gotten the job only to find out within a day or two that I am the certified tech hired to replace the only other certified tech who had quit. LOL
Had this happen way to many times.

Techs like M-Chan and Cheezit are few and far between Master techs not only in name but in fact. Years and years of training and experience, true masters of their trade.
Truth be known I bet they were only 1 of maybe 2 techs of their level in their own shops.

Just about everything in the post above spells out the entire truth to the TEE almost. In looking back through all the years of turning wrenches in a dealership, I sometimes question where the reward is, with being so eager to have all these "qualifications" under my belt. Does it really make me a better tech than the guy beside, slamming brake jobs and wallet flushes all day long, making more money than I am? It seems with every passing year, vehicles are becoming far more complex in just about every aspect. Even simple interior lighting systems involve at least a module of some sort, be that a GEM, LCM or in most of todays' Fords, an SJB that is networked to other modules for whatever purpose.

It also gets a little tiring from time to time, being the "go to" guy in the shop, or on the phone for whatever technical support is needed, while you tire away trying to earn your own buck, doing the job that one else wants, or no one else can do that pays peanuts for the amount of time/work involved.

20 years, i have worked in some very large shops with 30-40 techs and a few small ones with 3 -4 techs. I have for the last 10 years or so out flagged every other tech in the shops in warranty hours and been in the middle of the field in cp labor. it sucks getting evey warranty job. I also found myself in the top 5 in hours produced week after week.
all in all it was a fun ride
