1950's Fprd F5 (R)

Hey guys.
I just bought a 1950's F5 is great condition and would like to do mods to but Im not sure where to take it. I am torn between 4x4 or slamming it to the ground. No matter what I do I will be keeping the duallys. That is the man reason I bought the Truck. I want to make it into a motorcycle hauler but it will also be my daily driver.
As of right now I am wondering where to get a 4x4 axle for it or where I can get a new IFS to bag it. Right now I am leaning on Bagging it since it will never see dirt and I will be traveling with it. But if it is very costly to do the mods to it then I will go 4x4. If anyone has any information on the IFS that would be awesome! I dont know if you can take it off of a later model vehicle or anything like that. I would also like to keep the same lug pattern but I dont know if that is possible either.
Anyways here are some pictures I took of her today!

Welcome to FTE! Nice looking truck. There are lots of IFS options on the F100's but I'm not sure about these bigger trucks. Our experts will be along shortly.

Personally I'm not a big fan of lowering trucks. I'm not sure how it would look on the larger trucks,,,Well I guess I have seen some, usually a COE that look good. I would vote for the 4X4 since you see that less.

Whatever you decide, be sure to take lots of pictures and share with us.

I wouldn't mind going 4x4 either. I live in ND and it always helps when it's snowing. It would be pretty cool to have it lifted too. How to I go about find the right axle and parts to convert it? Thanks!

If you think baggin' it's going to cost a few bucks wait til you price out all the 4x4 components!

Do a search on Marmon-Herrington if you want to see a "factory" 4x4 and then decide if that's the route you want to go. If not you'll be looking at a later model conversion, either way it's going to cost you a few bucks.

Welcome to FTE!

That's a '52 by the outward appearance and the engine.

Ok I'll look into that 51mhf5. I already got a few quotes on a full custom front suspension and 4 link rear to lay frame and the lowest eat came in at $8k said and done. But I don't mind dropping the money on it. I just want to make a more informed decision. Thanks for the info!

There's 4x4 company's out there that will build you a custom width dana 60 (the only one that comes to mind at the moment is Currie) and make it just as tough as it needs to be. I'll bet you could set it up to use the same leaf spring mounts it has now.

Then you can put a dana 80 out of a step van in the back and call it good.

The M-H axles are very cool, but they don't have many options for modern brakes and gear ratios. And they are pretty spendy.

Just some ideas.

What are you planning for an engine?

Finding a big truck size M-H set of axles, transfer case, and linkage to do the 4x4 conversion wouldn't be too hard. Since every M-H Ford ever made has been a converted 2wd truck, it can be done just like a factory conversion. The gotcha, though, comes in trying to make it a daily driver. M-H would have geared their conversions at the lowest ratio available to serve the truck in its role as a beast of burden. You're probably looking at a 6.67/1 ratio in a donor set of axles. I guess you could do the search and find two of the 5.14/1 ring and pinion sets that were optional on F-4s, but that's no quick fix. These axles would allow you to swap wheels keeping the stock bolt pattern on either the 19.5" or 22.5" size which would be appropriate on a daily driver. Stu

If you wish to keep the GVWR high, you might look into a Dana S 110.

Thanks for all the info guys! I am not worried about the gvwr so much. My main goal is to get it 4x4 and keep the dually. I am going I look into the Dana but I'm a little worried about the gearing as it will be a daily driver and I'll probably drive it on road trips. Also, I am not going to worry about keeping the same lug pattern. I don't think I will keep the stock runs as it will be more of a restomod or rod. Another question; would it be possible to pull a diesel motor transmission and axles from a later model ford if I can find one? Thanks again!

Anything's possible F5 Deeg. All it takes is time and money. Sounds like you're going to farm the work out so find a good shop and open up that wallet!

I'd suggest you get the truck roadworthy as is and drive it for a while, figure out its personality, do your research and put a plan together. I've seen a few lowered 4x4's that were absolutely awesome.

51MHF5, I am actually going to try and do a lot of the work myself. Or at least with a few guys that I work with here in the oil fields. I have a full shop at my disposal so why not right? The reason I am asking questions is so I can learn and start doing research on what can be done so I can work on it myself.
As of right now the truck runs and is in good shape, except for the brake lines need fluid/ might have a leak and the tires are pretty rotted. I am going today with our shop mechanic and see if we can get the brakes working to at least get it in the shop.
Thanks for the tips!

There's been a really good thread on FTE recently with a dually truck (maybe F4) that had been converted to a 4x4. The truck was really well done. Does anyone remember the thread or who posted it?

Rojas, if you find it PLEASE post the link! Anyways, I have found a pair of axles off of a military 6x6 a front and rear and I'm wondering if those could work. Does anyone know what would have to be done to make that happen? Thanks guys
