Upper Michigan

Wow! Thanks for all the recommendations! Especially the restaurants. I always worry about getting stuck in a fast food joint while traveling because we're not sure where to go. I will definitely be referring to this thread along the hike. Leaving tomorrow evening after work. Gonna drive to Escanaba, which h is about 4.5 hours, catch a nap, then wake up and figure out where to go first. Probably gonna make a counter clockwise venture around the peninsula. Hopefully we'll have enough time to take it all in. Thanks for all the info. Really helpful!

Glad to help ya. Michigan sorta kinda is a forgotten state anymore I feel. Then again, most see only the southern half of the lower, and think the whole state is like that. I like to tell people that the real Michigan starts just out of Bay City, right where I75 narrows to two lanes all the way to the Soo, exit 164 to be exact.
Hope ya have a great time, and don't forget to grab a pasty somewhere along US2.

Trip was great! Thanks for all the info. Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island both were great and we can't wait to go back. Headed up to the Soo Locks and too the tour. Also, had a chance to eat at Antlers. The food and atmosphere was great. Spent our next night in Paradise and bumped into some retired folks from southern Wisconsin that knew a lot of the same people we do. Spent some time at Whitefish Point and waded in the freezing cold Lake Superior. Stopped at the upper falls and got some beautiful pics of the family. Moved on to Munising for the glass bottom boat tours and a Pasty at Muldoons. Regretfully didn't have time for the pictured rocks tour, but it will probably be our first stop when we head back up. Finished off the trip with a night in Marquette basically just to rest for the long drive home in the morning. Everything went great, the kids had a lot of fun, and the weather cooperated for the most part. Wish we had one more day to head up into copper harbor. I know I'm leaving out a lot of things we stopped to see. Again, thanks for all the great recommendations. Can't wait to go back!

Did you see a thousand footer at the Soo? I usually see them sometimes a couple times through the week. Those are the BIG BOYS!!
Glad you liked us. Now, there is an island called Isle Royale on the northwest end of Lake Superior, actually closer to Ontario than Michigan IIRC. No motorized stuff there either except for the boat that brings you out. Copper Harbour is one of the ports for the ferry going there. I got to spend a week there a few years ago, and did a lot of kayaking on the big lake.
I guess you found out about the swimming in Superior, eh?
