How do I tell what type of automatic transmission I have on my 1993 F-150? I have the overdrive push button on the end of the gear shifter. I am having some weird things happen with it. Sometimes it shifts really hard going into second gear. Sometimes shifting in the higher gears, the engine RPMs go way up to about 4000 and then all of a sudden the tranny will catch. Other times it works great! Any ideas?

 

i think it may be a E40d tranny like in my 90 f250 I am having a little bit of the same problem. i am thinking it may be tranny fluid needing changed. i will let you know if that fixes my problem.

 

Please do let me know if that works. I just bought the truck a few months ago and am having some oil pressure problems with the engine right now so I am working on that first.

 

You could have an E4OD or 4R70W(AODE-W). Both use all-electonic controls, so normal automatic transmission diangosis may not find your problem. Get a code scanner or have someone read diagnostic codes for you. Based on my problems with an E4OD, your fluid pressure is being regulated high in an attempt by the computer to compensate for another weak component in the transmission. Sometimes, just loose or dirty electrical connectons are the problem.

check and make sure your valve body is tight when you change the fluid.

 

Could be the neutral safety switch. This switch also tells the ECM what gear you are in. I haqd to replace the one on my Windstar because it quit shifting all together. My freind had to replace one on his Sable because you could be driving down the highway and it would throw itself into low gear for no reason. Replaced the switch(located on the tranny behind the shifter linkage) and both are fine to this day. It was about $25 at Auto-Zone.

Actually there was a code showing the neutral start code but I didn't think it could be that. Maybe I will try that too.

this weekend I changed the transmission fluid. it just might be internal but all the gears that do work shifts in nice and smooth have not actually drove the vehicle on the road yet though just 10ft forward and backwards.

My 93 F150 was shifting very hard. Turned out to be a sticking govorner. I dropped in a pint of Lube-Tech and the problem was gone in 5 minutes of idling.

I had tried replacing the transmission filter and fluid and this had no effect at all. This Lube -Tech stuff worked great.

 

The 93 has a Manual Lever Position Switch not the NSS. It lets the ECU know that it is in park or in Neutral for starting as well as each gear except O/D.

It is the E4OD and not the 4L70W. That one came in 97 I think, some in 96.

 

The 4R70W was used as early as '95; possibly earlier. The TRANS code on the door sticker will tell for sure, though. The E4OD code is "E" and the 4R70W code is "U". You can also tell by the pan shape.

 

Adrienc9 Replaced the mlps on my 94 5.0 4r70w because it would go to neutral between 3-4 after going down hill(no load) and start to pull again (load). It didn't do it all the time and you couldn't make it do it. Usually most often when hot and pulling load (boat). Takes 10min and cos t $70. Just do it! PM
