2008 f350 PCM Recall +$1K later

had recall work completed on reflash of PCM per letter from ford. The next regen cycle failed to complete on 2 occasions and gave me the reduced engine power display with the wrench. So I returned to ford dealer and showed the service manager the displayed error. The took it in the next morning and kept it for 2.5 days. They phoned me today and said after investigation that the thermostat needs replaced and a brake sensor needs replaced for $1k.
Question to my ford experts....Does this sound fair... or am I being scamed....Truck was running fine before I had the recall work done on the PCM....Well anyways....Just putting the question out there....anyone having PCM reflashed or replaced per recall....and end up with similar situation...Also tire recall....my tires fall into the recall parameters....Is this a ploy to recoup losses per the tire recall or what....Any ways thanks for reading and please reply if anyone else experiences similar problems....Peace....

I surmise that your truck is one of the prime examples of why the PCM flash was initiated. That is, a truck on the edge of a Hidden (not enough to drop a code) problem but that could become significant if left unidentified. I just don't know why it would cost $1K to replace the thermostat.

Wow, 1k for thermostats and brake sensors!!! how many shop hours for the replacement of the thermostats ? Are the thermostats covered under the warranty? like emmisions or engine warranty?
How many shop hours for the replacement brake sensor?
It took me about an hour at home to replace the thermostats, and I think 60.00 dollars in parts on my friends f250 4x4 6.4l td. let me know.
best of luck.

Well, $1000 sounds like double. we were told that a guy with a radiator leak was told $500 to visually check the tstats. If you can check them for $500 you can replace them for $500 plus the cost of the stats. You don't think they are $500, do you?

So if this truck is under 100K miles then that repair would be a no charge repair.

It should take about 1 hour to trouble-shoot the cooling system using a scan tool and road test.
The time to replace the radiator and thermostats should take around 3.8 hours. The radiator should be covered by 5 year /100k warranty, and the thermostats.
Call Ford customer service, or another dealer to check your warranty.

I found this on this website!

All 6.4 Radiators are now covered for 5yr/100000 miles
<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1; COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1 itxtNodeId="745"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->For anyone that doesn't know Ford is now covering all 6.4 radiators for 5 years or 100000 miles which ever comes first. Per TSB 09-23-1 concerning repeat radiators leaks due to possible hyper extended thermostats. However, even if they don't replace the thermostats the radiators are still covered under this tsb because they use the thermostat basic part number as the part when submitting it for a warranty claim. And thermostats on these engines are covered by the diesel powertrain warranty. So for anyone who is trying to be boned by a dealer after 3/36 make sure to tell them to check this tsb. I have already fixed a couple this way.

it is no longer covered. A later TSB changed that. Only if you have a hyperextended thermostats now.

If the thermostats had to be replaced, that sure sounds like the hyper extended issue covered under the TSB.

shop time ...customer pay is about 5 hours to replace radiator and t-stats.
remeber customer pay times are always hight then warranty. typical is 140% of warranty time. this os pretty much chilton and motors time guides equal.

Update. Have 110k on 2008 f350. After flashing update on PCM reduced engine power & wrench lite on dash. Dealer investigated from 730am to 12noon da next day... Phoned me and located problems. Codes P00B7, low coolant flow, & P0703 brake pressure switch leaking and open...dealer replaced one thermostat and one brake sensor switch...parts totaling $113.... Labor... $750...misc.... $13... Tax...$84....total $950 approx...paid dealer and got my truck back with no problems yet...I assume da $750 labor at $125 /hr was for finding and repair labor... With largest time spent on investigating... Question for my fellow ford super duty diesel truck owners & mechanics... Does this sound reasonable?.... Anyways...my tires Qualify for the tire recall so I'm also getting 4 new tires too... So that's a bonus... He in approx 2 weeks the New tires should be in.... So that's real cool...I like new tires... So dats my story on da new PCM flash results...please post if there are similar situations after updating to new firmware on PCM... Thank u....peace...

Seems to be pretty common with the new flash. Your price seems better, although those thermostats were in that shape probably before you hit 100K miles.

I think I would call ford cust svc and see if they would cover some of the cost.

Fair? Thats hard to answer. These trucks cost a fortune to work on and even the techs have commented that its wise not to own one out of warranty unless you can make your own repairs. Even at that, parts seem to cost a lot too. Every car/truck on the road has a radiator but the ones for this truck are probably double the cost than almost anything else out there. So fair? No, but I dont think anyone on here fell out of their chair in shock.
