Wants to die

I have a '99 350 ps. After it gets warmed up it dies & then you have to wait about 5 mins before it will start again. It will run for a few then die again and the cycle continues. I change the fuel filter last summer & when this started I changed it again, it had only been bout 3,000 miles since the previous filter change. I had a "diesel mechanic" (some guy that stopped along the road one of the times it died & offered help. Nice kid don't get me wrong) said he thought it could be an injector gone bad & the computer was shutting the engine down to avoid any damage.
Any thoughts is greatly appreciated.

Hello DItR,
Welcome to the Forum and know that the Brothers here will walk through this with you. This, as you know could be a number of things. How much fuel do you have in it? There is a ' pickup foot' in the tank that sometimes will break off and not pick up fuel. Also there are fuel screens in the tank that can get clogged. Also the fuel pump is going out. And a few other things that the Brothers will suggest.

How long has this been happening? Did it run fine and strong before this started. Was this 'progressive' or all at once? Do you have any 'add ons' of Tuners or chips. open the drain on the fuel bowl and drain out. Take cap off. have someone turn the key on while you are watching the bowl and see if it fills up ok. You may need to have the fuel pressure checked (some Brothers will tell you how to do this).

Dying only when warm suggests issues with the ICP/IPR. I'm at work and don't have ready access to a bunch of links, but that's where I would start.

Reading up on the ICP, is there oil in the connections and oil leaks through it? Unplug the ICP and see it it runs better with it unplugged. This may point to a failing ICP.

No add ons to it. It has been doing it for a little while but the not starting right afterward is new. I have tried draining the fuel filter bowl to relieve pressure in the line thinking that maybe there is a clog somewhere. Didn't seem to make a difference. Changed out the fuel filter, still no effect. I will check the icp next as suggested. Will update.
Its not a daily driver & I've a few irons in the fire. It could take me a few days to report back. I try to check the forum everyday for thoughts & ideas. I greatly appreciate the help.

It's not related to the fuel pump or fuel filter, so you can stop worrying about fuel. It's also not an injector going out on you.

Is the engine oil full? When was the last time it was changed? Are you running any additives in the oil?

IPR would be a good thing to check.

I don't run any additives in the oil. Changed the oil last June but have only put about 5,000 miles on it since. Is there a way to check the IPR to see if it is bad? Wife's telling me she saw the oil pressure gauge fluctuating when it did this. She was driving it at the time. (FYI, factory oil pressure gauge)
Thanks.

The factory gauge is pretty worthless. It probably started to fluctuate as the engine was trying to cut out as a result of the engine cutting out.

You could pull the IPR and inspect the o-rings and hope you get lucky and find a damaged o-ring. (FYI: one of the o-rings is a split o-ring, so if you see that, it's normal)

It only took me four months to finally get around to fixing it, & the culprit is...........the ICP. Pulled the plug on the ICP & it had oil in it. Changed it out & took it on my "test loop" & didn't have any problems. Driven it once since the test drive & again no problems. It appears the problem is solved & I can pull this iron out of the fire.
Thanks to all for your help. You saved me a butt load of money by not having to take it to a mechanic.

Glad you found it I was going to say mine never died but it wanted to. My Icp sensor was new and under warranty. I.got a new one and idle is more smooth and it doesn't try to die now.

It's doing it again! It worked great for a couple of weeks & now it's back dying again. Couple of times it sputtered & then died. Once I punched the throttle to get across a busy street & it just died. No sputtering. It took bout 30 mins before it would start again & it ran for < 5 mins & started sputtering & I tried giving it some throttle & it died with a big puff of smoke out the tail pipe. I looked at the plug of the ICP & it looks good to go. Should I move my attention to the IPR or something else? I appreciate everyone's help.
