Radio volume control fail?

Radio volume control fail?
My 2007 F-150 has the dreaded volume control fail. Seems this is an ongoing Ford problem, as I have seen the same failure in other Ford vehicles. Happens in Pam's 2003 Taurus, for one, and my brother's previous F-150.
When listening to the radio, and turning the volume control ****, nothing happens. Or the volume goes up when turning it down. Or goes down when turning up.
So why do manufacturers carry problems so long? Remember the old window-winder cranks on GM vehicles? The ***** always fell off, yet GM continued the same design for like twenty years.
Is there a fix for the radio problem?

I don't know about a permanent fix. I have the same issue once or maybe twice in the 7 years I have owned my F-150. However, I also had this problem once recently with a Kenwood I bought less than A year ago for another vehicle. In all cases the short term "fix" was to turn off the vehicle for a period of time then fire back up (restting of radio's computer controls).
