1996 f350 weird wiring

im trying to get my f350 running good.
i just picked it up recently and trying to work out the glitches.
its a 460 4x4 auto reg cab white.. always liked these trucks.
anyway.
the previous owner would disconnect the battery cuz the tail lights
and dome would stay on when running, and maybe draining battery
even when truck off?
i figured out if i pull #8 fuse they will go off, but,
so does the odometer and glove box light.
so when i test drove it i noticed that when i hit the brakes,
the dome, odometer, and glove box come on!
I checked all fuses and dist. box and all looks well.
any clues?
theres also a trailer brake. i dont know if it works, but, theres a
little light which stays on with #8 fuse in.
and when fuse out, light comes on only with brake pedal engaged...
any ideas?

Sounds pretty strange -- no obvious solution.

I'd probably try disconnecting the trailer brake and any other add ons ( trailer plug or whatever).

If it still acts strange, at least it SHOULD be wired like the factory.

i disconnected trailer brakes and still same
i forgot to mention that the tail lights and dome stay on even
with key off.... unless i pull that #8 fuse, which im doing right now instead
of disconnecting battery.
also i noticed today that the door chime doesnt sound. seatbelt wires have been
removed also and that light doesnt come on either.
and i can put it into gear w/o pressing brake pedal..

on a side note..
the truck would run really crappy and i found that by switching to the
front tank, it runs fine..
i think these trucks have pumps in the tanks?
which would mean the rear tank needs new pump?
I thought it might be fuel filter but it looks like both tanks use
1 filter located on frame rail under drivers seat area?

i wanna figure all this out before i start engine mods!
thanks!

I would 1st start by ripping EVERY aftermarket piece of wiring out of the truck.

As for your OD switch. it SHOULD be on the A/T shifter, NOT on the dash

still looking how to wire the overdrive button..now i gotta know!
so i took dash apart looking for usual suspects and found the cig lighter wires
were chewed. hooked them back up but same ol thing.
then, disconnected headlight switch and that didnt change anything either.
disconnect brake pedal sensor and lights still on!
took out radio and cd changer wires also...
starting to think 2 separate shorts?
anyone got some wiring schematics that i can hopefully understand?
thanks all!

im talking to myself here i realize, but good for documenting...
so i capped the cig lighter wires and now the tail lights and
dome light are OFF with the #8 fuse in!
the door/seatbelt buzzer decided to come on again also.
the odom and spdom still only come on with brakes on.....
and the dome comes on also with brakes .... almost there tho!

Interesting. I'm just looking for the speedo/odometer. My fuse (#8) keeps blowing. I'll going through the same list soon. Everything else seems ok on mine. Keep up the fight. And the posts. Like you said, good for documentation.
