Max Tow pushed to the MAX

Hey everyone,

Tomorrow headed out to Ohio to take part in our 7th meet in Millersburg, OH. Mike and I started these a few years ago, and we've had about a dozen FTE members show up and compare trucks by towing a heavy(10-15K lbs) trailer up a ~20% hill. It all started when I was trying to compare my diesel Super Duty to a V10-powered truck, but it soon grew to cover just about every flavor of full-size Ford.

This'll be my first time there in an F150, but I have high hopes!

Here was our FIRST ONE.

2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Hope she doesn't blow up!

sure looks like the truck seems to jump around a lot like trailer was pushing it all over. what's that weight of the trailer? 10 to 15 is vague

That is awesome.....Glad to see a well equipped half ton do some serious work! It is certainly amazing how far these trucks have come in the last 10 years. Cannot wait to see more!

Not sure if that's just the video, neither myself or the others who drove my truck felt like it was pushing us around. Total trailer weight was just over 15,100 lbs.

There was no way to successfully launch in 2WD up that hill. Matt's F350 just spun in 2WD with the same trailer, and he had another 1,000 lbs of weight on the rear axle over what my F150 had.

I thought the truck looked amazing towing it. Didnt seem to push or float at all.

How does it compare to other engines they have tested on that hill?

If you go to the writeup on the SD forum in the link you can see videos of all the other trucks. My little F150 was the fastest up the hill, beating the 6.4L Powerstroke truck.

Wow that sure is a testament to how good that 3.5L Twin Turbo motor really is!!! It would be great to have more videos! You do know Tom that you will now be forever linked as the guy that towed way more than the truck was rated...and proved the Ecoboost is no joke! Great job!

Thanks Rob. I tend to think that this is ample proof that you can't break these things by pushing them hard. The weakest link compared to the SD is the cooling system IMHO, as the smaller radiator wasn't able to keep the engine as cool as the SDs were. In comparison my Excursion would have never broken 210° under the same conditions(ask me how I know...), so if I were to pull that hill up to the Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado I would have likely seen reduced power to protect the engine. The advantage this kind of cooling setup has is its ability for the cooling fans to work at max efficiency regardless of engine speed; this made it cool off much faster when stopped than the Super Duty trucks did.

Everyone else there was a Super Duty owner, and I gave everyone interested a chance to drive it with the trailer. Nobody had any issues or complaints about how it handled the trailer, and everyone seemed genuinely impressed at the capabilities of the F150. One thing that helped was the StableLoad product that I got to try for the first time; it really helped the rear springs control the load. I'll be posting a review with photos later today!
